Cool, I'm in favor of registering on Drumbeat. Is there any reason not to? This is actually the first I'd heard of it. My first impression is that it's a bit like Ohloh, but with incentives in the form of potential funding.

I am slightly less busy these days -- I'll try to get back on the postMessage/iframe stuff. If I come to a good stopping point on that front I may take another look at WordPress integration. How is the Rhizome stuff coming along, David?

We need to do some more brainstorming about sustaining ShiftSpace development now that I have a full-time job. I've been able to use some of my time at work to do some skunk-working on features we've talked about for a long time - incorporating real-time collaborative elements into ShiftSpace.

Socket.IO seems to be taking off in the Node.js community as a way to support the WebSocket protocol on browsers that don't support it natively.

But skunk-working is not the same as putting in the crazy hours to push what we have to the finish-line, which is so close that it's just embarassing that it's not done.

So I'm all ears about ideas on how to keep the flow going. My Rhizome work will be wrapping up soon so I'll have more brain space to myself for §. Part of me says that we should look seriously at what's going in the Node.js community - largely because there's a crazy ground swell of interest/excitement.

However the thought of converting our backend to Node.js mostly gives me a sad face, because its model is quite horrible for non-trivial applications. There's also some key pieces we want for pluginless which require potentially CPU intensive operations - libxml stuff - this might not play well with Node.js's model.

David,
Your Socket.IO vid looks great... I remember wanting to do things like that back in 2001... back then even Flash couldn't do that well.
Also, nice job on the CouchDB case study... I wish we could have taken advantage of it and leverage it to dev interest.

You say:

I agree. Though after spending a few years in the Free Software world I think it would be fair to say that after putting the idealistic economic aspirations aside, projects that are too experimental to breed the "I can see myself using this in the future for my own thing" sentiment, are just less attractive. We have never really invested in a good answer for the question "why should I fork it?" or "why should I want to make my own space?", not to mention "why should I want to contribute to core?"... Our plans for §1.0 and especially the § unplugged shift&share features will make the platform much much more accessible and appealing, I am quite sure of that, but we need to get there.

I think our discussions a few months back about what can be called SSaaS (ShiftSpace as a Service) might be a good direction for us to help "get there" while answering even more of these questions. I personally am not really in the mood for starting a startup. Especially now that I am away for the U$. But I am inspired by Open Source models, like CloudMade - a service built as a customization API layer on top of OpenStreetMap for serving custom web maps (essentially Google Maps on steroids, content and feature-wise).

I think a SSaaS model is viable for us. But even that can only happen after we get a beta version of 1.0 out of the door. For that I am afraid David's time is still the key. David, for the sake of the brainstorm, let's say we get some angel funding for a SSaaS startup. Would we be able to translate that money to development hours (from hired devs + you) that makes §1.0 a reality within <6 months?

Thanks for bringing this issue up,
+ I really really miss you guys.

cheers,

I think it's much more than Ohloh, and the fact Mozilla is behind it
really changes everything.
I know some of these people, and I think it makes sense for us to be on
there.

Harlo, would you take the lead on this one?
