[trying again -- I tried to send a file that was too large...]

Attached is the record that came today. It is the marriage certificate of a
23 year old Margaret Shields to a 25 year old Denis Delaney in January 1861.
Margaret lists her father as Patrick, but he is listed as a carpenter, not a
shoe maker. Given Margaret's birth certificate, she should be four months
shy of her 20th birthday, not aged 23.

I found the two of them in the 1861 census (will attach separately, it's too
big). Margaret again lists herself as 23, and indicates she was born in
Ireland, which is a discrepancy with what we know given her birth
certificate.

Is this our Margaret? I don't know. There are enough "wrong" answers or
questionable ones to give doubt.

If it is not, then who is she? How is she related to James Delaney? And
where is OUR Margaret?

I don't find a Margaret and Denis Delaney in the 1871 or later census for
Manchester (although I only did a cursory search this afternoon). Give the
fact that we do not see Margaret anywhere else, I'm thinking this still
could be our Margaret.

Maybe she was confused on her age. For comparison, on her wedding
certificate in 1867, she claims she is 26 (she WAS 26). In the 1871 census,
she gives her age as 28 (she was 30), and her birth place as Birkenhead.

Maybe in 1861, Denis didn't know the details when the census taker asked
him? If Margaret had a thick brogue (given that she grew up in a all Irish
neighborhoods), then maybe he really didn't know where she was born?

So the answer is we don't know.

Your thoughts?

Rebecca

So what certificate arrived? It sounded like the one that came didn't
really fit what we were expecting. How close/far did it end up?
