Since I last posted, I have made two jigs with semi-circular bases for
honing carving gouges and they work quite well, even though they don't
flip over to hone the inside like your standard jigs. I made an even
stranger jig with a 75* base to fit my V-parting tool and that works
surprisingly well. I never had such a sharp V tool in my life!

Thanks for all the ideas!

Hi Tom

I would be really interested in putting pictures of your jigs, with
tools in them, to add to my web pages. I have no pictures of jigs with
carving gouges.

I have read that having a microbevel on a carving chisel makes it much
easier to use. The idea is that the base of the microbevel forms a
fulcrum so you can drop the handle a little and the cutting edge rises
up, reducing the thickness of the shaving and lifting out of the work.
Have you tried this?

Tom,

I am new to carving and trying to learn how to sharpen my carving
chisels.
Your comment about the V tool is important to me. Do you have
information on
sharpening other carving chisels also.
