All my life, when I'd try to sleep, every sudden noise makes an explosion of light behind my eyelids, often a hypnogogic jerk, a shock through my nervous system, and for years, accompanied a scream. Chest pain forms after 75 or so episodes during the same hour. If there are any chemical irritants in the air, I have coughing attacks lasting up to 4 hours. The doctor says I'm perfectly healthy. Exploding head syndrome with chemical hypersensitivity is the diagnosis closest to what I have, but in the description, mine is painful, and it's every night. The description's version is once in a while, and not painful.  Mine sometimes accompany trips to the ER. I spent thousands of dollars in useless medical tests to track this down as my doctors roll their eyes, 'hypochondriac.' Other people I live with, and I've moved 56 times, I've lived with a lot of people, always, without fail, try to convince me that I'm causing this, and it's all mental. Taking their advice, I've put myself through the torture of many psych drugs in the name of optimism, causing permanent brain damage. That was the worst experimenting I ever did. I'm not sure what's worse, this insomnia or all the ridicule from everyone, including my parents and sister, for what I cannot help.
