Rebuilding Together is a wonderful organization that helps low-income elderly and disabled people restore their homes in wonderful and amazing ways. They have branches all over the country. We've been working with them in Pasadena for many years. This is a great opportunity to work hard (check out the hours), help others, and feel great. Try and sign up early for this one: The more people we have, the more ambitious we can be!

They have four homes (for women and their kids) and we'll be going to one of them to do a major amount of cleaning, gardening, painting and even some furnishing. It can use people with all kinds of talents. (You know who you are.) We'll also be working not just for, but also with the residents of the homes. Feeling ambitious? Come to Part I, on Saturday!!

#165 - Get A Camp Ready for Summer (The Third Shift)
The Salvation Army has been helping needy people in all kinds of ways for more than 150 years. Camp Mt. Crags and Camps Gilmore are terrific Salvation Army camps that offer recreational and educational programs for youth ages 7-16 in a wholesome and fun atmosphere. Here campers have an opportunity - many for the first time - to experience nature in a supervised, safe outdoor setting. On Big Sunday the Salvation Army has asked for a bunch of help maintaining this pretty site. Volunteers will be planting trees, clearing brush, cleaning a creek, developing a trails, cleaning cabins, etc., etc. Really, you'll be doing everything but making a lanyard. If you love summer camp, and want other kids to be able have that great opportunity, this is the one for you! Per the Salvation Army: "The dollars saved through the man hours volunteered on Big Sunday will ensure that no child will miss the opportunity the attend camp based on lack of finances." We'll be going to Mt. Crags and Camp Gilmore all weekend. If this shift doesn't work - or you want to stay longer - please see the other listings.

#135 - Have a Day of Helping and Happiness at the Hooper Avenue Elementary School
The Hooper Avenue Elementary School is a very friendly year-round school that serves a very low-income group of families. They have asked volunteers to come for a special school beautification. We will be working for - and with - the Hooper Avenue community cleaning, planting, painting, and helping wherever we can. It will be a great and fun day of community service and community building. Big Sunday has also been asked to provide canned food - especially food with lots of protein like beef stew and chili; new and gently-used kids' clothes; and books to give the kids.

#278 - Make a New Old Friend in Sherman Oaks
The Village at Sherman Oaks is a retirement home with nearly 300 residents. Their residents would love some visitors, to chat, sing, or maybe even do arts and crafts. In fact, they're open to whatever you'd like to do. They're nice people, and happy and grateful for the company. (Unless it's little kids, running around unsupervised, which they find a little annoying. Then again, who wouldn't?) This is a great project for friendly people of all ages.
