The natural disasters seem to keep getting closer and closer. When they hit we need to be ready to respond with the right credentials. serveLA is connecting with Red Cross so that we can be on the frontlines in all future catastrophes. See the step by step process below for more info. Join us! Go to an orientation next week in your area of the city.

For anyone who's interested in serving for the current Station Fire, future fires or emergencies, or other needs that the Red Cross has, here's how to do so:

1. Attend a 2 hour volunteer orientation. (You can register online, and review this entire process, at http://redcrossla.org/volunteers/how-to-volunteer) The next orientations, fyi, are Wed, Sept 9 in Inglewood and Fri, Sept 11 in West LA. You'll submit a volunteer app at the orientation, which you can also download at the above link and fill out beforehand if you want.

On the volunteer app, you select whether you want to focus on Disaster/Response Services, Youth Programs, Health/Safety, Communications/Marketing, etc... (view the list here - http://redcrossla.org/volunteers/volunteer-opportunities)

2. After the initial orientation, you complete a basic background check at mybackgroundcheck.com, (you'll get more info on this at the orientation). Once that is done, the volunteer staff at the Red Cross will refer you to the area where you want to serve, and you can schedule hours and take it from there.

3. If your focus is Disaster/Response Services (i.e. you want to help with the Station Fire, and future fires, emergencies, etc...), there's an additional application and orientation to attend.

Fill out the Disaster Services app - http://redcrossla.org/emergencyservices/files/2009/04/dshr-enrollment-package.pdf and

Attend a 'Fulfilling Our Mission' Disaster Orientation class - schedule is here - http://redcrossla.org/training/disaster-services-classes

The next Disaster Orientation is Tues, Sept 8 at 7pm in Inglewood. You can sign up online at the above link. You can also attend this before the General Volunteer Orientation class.

If you have q's on any of the above, easiest way to get an answer is to contact the

Office of Volunteer Programs at (866) 548-8226 or (310) 943-5268 or at volu...@arcla.org.
