cutting advice

i've wanted to cut myself for a very long time. i'm very practical
which gets in the way of pretty much everything.
i'm hoping someone here can give me advice to keep me from really
hurting myself, while i hurt myself.
in my mind i imagine until it drives me crazy cutting a star pattern
above my ankles. mainnly because i can hide them with socks. it's not
deep cutting i want.. it's light cuttings that leave scars/patterns
over time.
are the lower legs a bad place. which parts of the body should be
avoided in cutting.
