To Sejong Society Members,

This month, the Sejong Society will host very informative, and
well-rounded guest speakers regarding the Korean Peninsula, and the
US-ROK alliance. This month's theme will revolve around the mainstream
media, and its reporting regarding events on the Korean Peninsula
(including the latest analysis on the North Korean missile launches.)

"U.S. Mainstream Media Perceptions of the Korean Peninsula"

Mr. Don Oberdorfer
Distinguished Journalist in Residence and Adjunct Professor of
International Relations at Johns Hopkins University's Nitze
School of Advanced Internatinal Studies (SAIS).

Mr. Oberdorfer, author of The Two Koreas: A Contemporar History, will
speak
from his experience on reporting about South Korea during his 25 years
at the
Washington Post, and his thoughts on how the U.S. media currently
portrays events on the Korean Peninsula.

Perspective"

John Feffer
Mr. John Feffer is the author of several books and numerous articles.
He serves on the advisory committees of Foreign Policy in Focus and the
Alliance of Scholars Concerned about Korea. He is on the steering
committee of the Washington, DC local of the National Writers Union.

Masakatsu Ota
Mr. Ota is a Washington correspsondent from Japan's Kyodo
News. Mr. Ota covers the White House, the Department of State, and
nuclear
proliferation issues. Mr. Ota accompanied Prime Minister Junichiro
Koziumi
to the September 2002 Pyongyang Summit.

China Specialist Guest Speaker: TBA

This event will focus on the Korean Peninsula from a broad perspective
from the
US, Japanese, and Chinese media. We will compare and contrast how each
respective country's media reporting on the Korean Peninsula, and how
they have
influenced the judgements of policymakers in Northeast Asia.

Assistant Program Officer for East Asia

The National Endowment for Democracy (NED), a congressionally funded,
private, nonprofit grant making organization that works to support
freedom around the world, seeks an Assistant Program Officer with its
East Asia team. The position is based in Washington, DC.

The Assistant Program Officer will work with program staff to provide
programmatic and administrative support to NED's East Asia grants
program, monitor program budgets, prepare reports and assist in the
development of projects in the region.

Specific duties of the Assistant Program Officer will include:

* Assisting in the evaluation of project proposals and drafting
summaries of proposals to present at quarterly Board meetings;
* Assisting in monitoring the work of existing grantees;
* Tracking political developments in the region;
* Providing administrative support to the region's program
officers;
* Organizing events to highlight specific democracy-related issues.

Applicants should have the following qualifications:

* A Master's level education or equivalent knowledge in
international affairs, politics or a related discipline, or a relevant
Bachelor's degree and two years' experience in democracy-related work;
* Knowledge of political issues and trends in East Asia, especially
North Korea;
* Bilingual fluency in Korean and English, including excellent
written and oral communication skills;
* MS Office Skills;
* High degree of organization and initiative;
* Excellent interpersonal skills.

NED offers competitive salaries and excellent benefits. The NED is an
