Dear Lucy,
Greetings from Project C.U.R.E.! This email is to confirm that we received your Request for Cargo Assistance application. Thank you. Below you will find some additional information about our program and process.
The first step in our process is for a Project C.U.R.E. representative to travel to visit your medical facilities for a Needs Assessment visit. The Needs Assessment deposit is $4000 for projects located outside the Western Hemisphere (Central America,
South America and the Caribbean). The $4000 will cover airfare, Project C.U.R.E. flat assessment fee ($1000) and other related costs including, but not limited to, visas and insurance for the Needs Assessment Representative. We will take care of all arrangements
related to the aforementioned.
We ask that the in-country host take care of arrangements and expenses for all in-country travel, accommodations and meals. Our Representatives do not need fancy accommodations or meals – we just ask that they have a safe and clean place to stay and they
are accompanied by the host. We have found that this is a more efficient and cost effective way to take care of the in-country logistics of the Assessment visit.
Any part of the $4000 deposit that we don’t use to cover the airfare and related costs mentioned above will be credited to the cost of your container. On average shipping and handling is $20,000. After the Assessment is complete, your project will be passed
on to our Operations Department – they will then review the reports and recommendations from the Assessment visit and let you know the exact shipping costs for your project.
It is our pleasure to work with you in this worthy partnership to “Deliver Health and Hope” to the people that you are helping.
Feel free to contact me if you have questions or would like clarification on any of the information below.
Sincerely,
Amy

What is Project C.U.R.E’s Cargo Program?
Project C.U.R.E sends donated medical supplies to over 130 countries in the world using 40-foot shipping (cargo) containers. Each Project C.U.R.E container has an average value of $400,000 to 450,000 worth
of donated medical supplies and equipment.
What is the process for the Cargo Program?
Before any medical goods or equipment are delivered to a medical facility, an Assessment Study by a trained Project C.U.R.E Needs Assessment Representative is performed to determine the specific needs of the recipient facility and ensure that specific
needs and requirements are understood and met.
Step 1: Request for Assistance Application Form
Each applicant needs to fill out the Request for Assistance Application Form in order to begin the process of working with Project C.U.R.E to bring health and hope to your country. If you have not already completed the Request
for Assistance Application form, please do so at:
Step 2: Needs Assessment Deposit Fee and Planning the Assessment Visit
After the Request for Assistance has been processed, the Needs Assessment Coordinator will work directly with the designated person at your organization to plan the timing and logistics for the assessment visit on a mutually
agreeable date. The $4000 Needs Assessment Deposit Fee must be received before any airline tickets or other travel arrangements can be made.
Step 3: Assessment Visit
During the Needs Assessment Visit, the Project C.U.R.E representative will determine the following:
- The specific needs of the medical facilities
- The ability of the recipient facility to install, use, and maintain the equipment
- The assurance that the donations will be properly used to aid those in need
- The relationship between the recipient and government and customs officials to facilitate the importation of the goods
- The logistics of delivery
Step 4: Delivery Arrangements
After the Assessment Visit is complete, your project will move on to our Operations Department. They will review the reports and recommendations from the Assessment Visit and then will let you know the exact shipping costs for
your project based on location.
A proposed Inventory Control (PIC) list that contains everything that will go on the container is prepared for the recipient organization and medical professionals to review. The recipient can approve or disapprove any items
listed. When the list is finalized, government approvals are in order, and the funds have been sent to Project C.U.R.E, the delivery arrangements will be made.
How much does the Cargo Program cost? Who is responsible for the financial sponsorship?
The Needs Assessment deposit is $4000 for projects located outside the Western Hemisphere (Central America, South America and the Caribbean). The $4000 will cover airfare, Project C.U.R.E. flat assessment fee ($1000) and other related costs including,
but not limited to, visas and insurance for the Needs Assessment Representative. We will take care of all arrangements related to the aforementioned.
We ask that the in-country host take care of arrangements and expenses for all in-country travel, accommodations and meals. Our representatives do not need fancy accommodations or meals – we just ask that they have a safe and clean
place to stay and they are accompanied by the host. We have found that this is the most efficient and cost effective way to take care of the in-country logistics of the Assessment Visit.
Any part of the $4000 deposit that is not used to cover the airfare and related international travel costs will be credited to the Project Fee. On average the Project Fee (which includes shipping and handling door to port) is $20,000 per 40 foot cargo
container, depending on location.
Frequently Asked Questions
What Partners are involved in the process?
Partnerships are essential to Project C.U.R.E’s mission and to successfully carrying out each Cargo Project. By working together, many lives are saved and countless hours of suffering are eliminated. Partners may be separate individuals or may share responsibilities.
Key participants in a successful Project C.U.R.E partnership include:
- Organization Making the Request (Applicant) - the person or organization that starts the process by completing the Request for Assistance form.
- End-User (Recipient Hospital or Clinic) - the facilities that are being considered for the Cargo of medical goods and services delivered from Project C.U.R.E.
- Contact Person on Location (Host) — we ask than an individual involved with the application procedure serve as a host for the Project C.U.R.E. representatives during the Assessment Study visit. An in-country point person is also needed to aid in
delivery arrangements and logistics.
- Financial Sponsor — the Sponsor is responsible for the costs associated with both the Assessment Visit and the Project Fee. Sponsors in the past have included companies working in the area, civic organizations (i.e. Rotary Clubs), government departments,
religious organizations, and individual donors. Please note: Project C.U.R.E. requires that the applicant take the lead and an active role in identifying this critical partner.
- Government and custom officials — in order to facilitate the necessary approvals needed to receive and accept the import of Project C.U.R.E. goods, the Recipient must have a good, working relationship with the host government. If the Recipient doesn’t
have an established working relationship with the government or those involved with import regulations, then meetings should be set up during the Assessment Study between the proper government officials, the Recipient’s representative and Project C.U.R.E.’s
Representative.
Where does Project C.U.R.E deliver the shipment? Are fees and duties included in the cost?
Typically, Project C.U.R.E. delivers “door to port”. This is from Project C.U.R.E’s warehouse in the US to the in-country destination port. Destination delivery can be arranged if possible and requested, for an additional fee.
Charges for clearance, port fees, duties, taxes, detention and demurrage are the responsibility of the Recipient and cannot be handled by Project C.U.R.E. It is crucial to obtain a duty-free exemption from the government prior to the shipment so that there
are no taxes or duties levied on the container.
The average cost of delivering one 40 foot cargo container (includes procurement, processing, warehousing, domestic transportation within North America, and ocean freight) is approximately $20,000. The average value of the contents of the container is
$400,000-$450,000.
We are a small non-profit and don’t have funds, can Project C.U.R.E give us financial assistance?
Unfortunately, Project C.U.R.E does not have the funds to provide financial assistance to any Recipient, and therefore, cannot act as a Sponsor. Project C.U.R.E. is a non-profit organization that fully relies on a sponsoring partner to fund each Cargo
Project.
How long does the process take?
The timing of the project depends on several factors including how quickly and completely the information and Needs Assessment deposit fee is submitted, how quickly packing list approvals and customs approvals are obtained and availability of funding.
Project C.U.R.E. has thousands of items in our medical inventory, so the process is typically not dependent on our ability to provide the supplies and equipment. Most delays are the result of slow communications or the lack of governmental approvals or
lack of funding.
What kind of equipment and supplies are typically in each container?
Generally, Project C.U.R.E can provide nearly everything necessary to operate a hospital or clinic. Each container is customized the needs of the recipient facility and contains an average of 10% biomedical equipment, 40% durable goods and 50% consumable
goods.
- Consumable Goods — needles, syringes, catheters, IV starting kits, surgical kits, hand-instruments, etc.
- Durable Medical Equipment — beds, overbed tables, gurneys, crutches, canes, walkers, wheelchairs, cabinets, desks, chairs and other furniture.
- Biomedical Equipment (not guaranteed) — X-ray machines, operating tables, suction machines, anesthesia machines, ultrasound, lights, stools, buckets, laboratory equipment, otoscopes and ophthalmoscopes, etc.
All equipment is checked for functionality and repaired if necessary before shipping. Larger medical equipment usually accounts for approximately 10% of the container. Project C.U.R.E’s inventory is very dynamic and changes on a weekly basis. Project C.U.R.E
is always working to procure more items, but please remember we can only donate items to the recipient facility that have been donated to us.
