Respond to this thread for ideas on our first season.

I think Chekhov could easily fill the classic bill. Id rather do
Shakespeare if I had a choice, but we'll see.

I think for our original piece, we should think about including, if
ever so subtly, the mythologies of the heavy Asian demographic in
Seattle, as well as the Northern Pacific Native Americans.
I really like mythology and this idea ties us to the local that will be
supporting us. Rootsy, yeah?

Brecht could also be pretty bombastic if we wanted it to be.
"3 Penny Opera" anyone?

I'm really into rippin on rich people these days. Social responsibility
and the like.

I like the idea of the orginal piece. We'd have to get someone of that
demographic to have a heavy hand in creating the piece. It makes me
nervous doing a piece on a culture that none of us are a part of.

Morgan

PS- Maybe this could be an educational project later on? We could get
kids from whatever demographic and help them create a piece on what it
means to be a part of said culture?

Yeah, the utmost care and concern would need to be taken. Maybe I don't
really know how to do that. Maybe better to let it go.
thanks Kira.

I think that the cultural "ticket" would be to involve appropriate
people, like Morgan said, and keep my white ass out of it.

cheers,

I'd really like to produce one film a year as well.
This will bring national attention to our theater company and help
actors and directors with film careers. I have some experience with it.
Hopefully I can rope in a friend or two who have more experience.

a production with or by a GUEST ARTIST.
A national or international company is showcased.
This could include the film. We could, for instance, produce an indie
script from London(had we the means).

But, for my money, it would be better to keep the official guest artist
theatrical because- while they are in residency(or whatever)- they can
give company workshops! Bloosh!

Obviously I think its a good idea.

I've been reading these posts on Guest Artist and I wonder if that
might be a bit of a loft goal our first year. It's a good idea but the
first year is going to be tough to learn how we work let alone explain
it to someone else.

3 Penny opera? Man I've heard Mack the Knife so much for the last few
months at Karoke that I'm sick of that song. Still good play.

These are some things that have been mentioned
recently that haven't found there way to this post.
-A Fairy tale in the grim Brothers Grimm style.
-Peter and the Wolf(?)
-I'm going to start soon on a piece about poet Fernando Pessoa. Don't
know if it'll be ready for first season.

I really like the idea of doing the Fairy Tales Grimm Brother's style with our stamp on it.  It could be really spectacular and interesting.  Really dark and a little absurd.

What if we first did like the happy go lucky version and then immediately go into the more dark and morbid version of it?

That way we can do the happy ones for the children but then have like Mature Audience Only Nights.

This could get confusing but could give us a chance to explore quite a bit.

I think a guest artist our first season--especially one that we trust
and one that has been down the road we're attempting to go down--could
be potentially very helpful and I think we should look into it.

Brother's Grimm--

So far the most liked idea. Other comments on it? Sal, Kira?

Felisa said she liked the Grimm idea to me over the phone and had an
idea that sort of went along with Brenda's. We were talking about a set
and she said it would be cool if it were set in a junkyard (or
somewhere with alot of old crap sitting around) and the actors were all
modern day people and then somehow we sort of created fairy tales out
of the crap. Cue fantasy sequence after fantasy sequence. If we could
find some scenario to make this work, we could find some social issue
to address this way also and give the piece another level. I really
like what Brenda said about have alternate versions for kids and
adults. I really want to research these fairy tales. We should all
start doing this assuming we don't have any objections to this idea.
PEOPLE PLEASE VOICE YOUR OPINIONS NOW. It would be cool if we could
make this the first piece or atleast in the first season. I would love
to have something decided just for my own piece of mind. I feel like
once we decide on ONE thing, everything else will follow.

Fairy (Faerie or whatever) tales thing is a good idea. It's public
domain so we can butcher it in whatever manner we want without worrying
about a writer being pissed off and the possiblity of legal action. But
as I was told once about doing theatre, "If you're in this biz and
haven't gotten a cease and desist than you're doing something wrong."
Didn't come from a repritable director but it stuck.

[prepare the rain for the parade]
Discusing actual production elements is getting a bit ahead of
ourselves. We have no space, equipment, facilities or any of the basics
of theatre. Mind you I'm in love with this idea of the junkyard. There
are so many ways to hide really cool effects inside broken up pieces of
junk and all the oddities you can find if you look.
This is all the tech in me talking. The guy that have stayed for 20+
hours at a theatre to get a production working or salvaged production
elements that weren't thought out or had to deal with a director that
wanted more and more low laying fog even though there was no fucking
way I could get more out there with the equipment I had.

So yes I vote for this Grimm idea and I'm caught between two realities.
One is that 'you shouldn't run before you walk' and the other is 'they
can't hit a moving target.' But don't let me fool you into thinking I'm
discouraging this I just want to let it be known that the space often
dictates what kind of show you can do. And if we are renting space from
another theatre they may not want a bunch of junk on their stage. No
matter how clean we claim it is. So for right now getting married to a
concept is a bit premature.

So I am all for the Grimm's brother fairytales with modifications TBD at a later date.  I think it is productive to get excited and have ideas but Sal is correct on getting ahead of ourselves.  I mean we don't even know who will do what on this first production and so to start talking about concepts could end in all of us having a rumble!!!  Okay, so basically I just said "Good point" with a whole lot of words!

Wow nothing new. Hey guys just wondering when auditions are gonna be, i
just want to make sure i make it into the company before i start
selling all my possesions. Now am I gonna have to prepare a classical

planning on bringing an accompianist to the audition so I hope one will
be provided. I have a classical and a musical theater belt piece
prepared, I hope thats ok. Would you like my head shot and resume in my
makeup porfolio or would you like them seperate? i think that is all
the questions i have please let me know whats going on thanks everyone
see you at auditions!

Oh! btw when are where are they gonna be held?

ps i had a dream a while ago about naming the company "Act One Theater
company" or "Destiny's child theatre company." hey i didn't say all my
dreams are good and prophetic.
i love you guys.

Hey everybody.  I just wanted to post since it has been awhile.  I don't want us to stop coming up with ideas. (I know I am guilty of it on SEVERAL occassions!).

So how does everyone feel about the word Chimera.  I like it for many reasons.  First, it could be combined with another word for deeper meaning.  Second, dates back to ancient greek so we have the roots of theatre thing going on.  Third, it means fanciful dream, or like illusion.  Which is what we do.  So if we can combine it with like askew or something then we'd have this double meaning like breaking the illusions.

I like the past mentioned ones as well but just thought I'd bring up a new one.  Other thoughts have been violent words like combat or something since we are "combatting the forces of conventional theatre".  Other synonyms for theatre that I liked were locale, odeum, gridiron, haunt, sector.  It could be fun to say something like we are going to the ...... locale.

Also, does everyone know when they plan to move up to Seattle?  I just was planning the next year and wanted to see what everyone else was up to?

I like Ghost Light Productions enough.  There is another company already named that but if no one cares then it is something to be considered.  I am just trying to get a debate going again.  I miss the mass amount of e-mails I'd get in one day.

The only thing with Ghost Light is that I feel that maybe something more passionate and less passive.  Does this make sense?  Anyway,

Ghostlight is out for me. I couldn't bear having the same name as some other group.
I'm a bit hung up on this name thing. There are few at this point that I'd like to commit too. Of course, the ones I like- I suggested. I'm sure that everyone else feels the same way.
Keep posting everyone! We need a name!

I think Gannon is right.  (yes we are actually agreeing Gannon : ).  If we keep posting and then compile all of the names at some point and vote on them and have an open forum as to why we like and dislike each of them then that might help.  I don't know though.  But that way we can see all the names in front of us and see why everyone likes and dislikes them.  This could take awhile but just a though.

I realize I'm still the only one singing it's praise but I'm still all
for Ghost Walk. So yeah I'm stuck on it and haven't come up with
anything good but that is the one I'm all behind right now... I can
change though... if something I like more come ups.

NEW NAME BRAINSTORM:

Somthing with "suspend" or suspention of disbelief...
Apothecary Productions (i don't know why. Gannon said we turn to shakespeare
for names so that one's from him)
Two hour traiffic productions (again from good old Will--that one's more
theater related--R & J-- "two hour traffic of our stage")
Poor Player productions (again from Shakespeare--macbeth)
something with "revel" in it (the tempest "our revels now have ended") maybe
a reference to the ended thing to like "revel again productions" i don't
know...
something with "escape" ie escapism
mab theater or queen mab productions --i kinda like it without the queen
though--it's more mysterious--i think the queen mab speech is so bizarre and
fantastical--why couldn't it be refering to something theatrical
MASS productions (this of course is a pun, and also becuase we are theater
for the masses, and mass like wieght, artistic weight, bla bla bla)
Avenue Theater (avenue is a way to get somewhere, it's a pathway, it's open
and for everyone...)
Potent Productions
Hole Productions (again a pun on "whole", hole is an entry, you don't know
what's on the other side...)
I looked up one of Gannons in the dictionary "Spectral" I like this becuase
it can mean ghost and it can also mean "of a spectrum." It also sounds like
spectator, and speculate...and the gynocologist one is speculum so i'm over
that hang up.
