as far as casting, it is over 80% of what makes a show
good and therefore its very hard to give up that part
of the process. having said that, i trust u
implicitly. i'm certain if you and i talk in enough
detail you will have no doubt what i'm looking for and
i think it would be just fine for you to cast the
show. i would want you to then consider yourself AD,
and speak freely about the show creatively. i would
also of course ask that you strongly consider yourself
for feste, malvolio and/or aguecheek.
which brings me to concept. my first question... are
puppets ok for this production? i think smaller cast
is better, and we can make use of the puppets in a
number of characters like feste, malvolio, antonio.
Next do we have any older actors who will go along on
this fucked up ride and can pull off Belch and Maria.
Belch and aguecheek, like stephano and trinculo, are
the keys to the shows success.
this is kinda how i was thinkin of the breakdown of
characters, real vs. puppet:
REAL
Orsino
Olivia
Viola
Sebastian
Belch
Maria
Aguecheek
PUPPET
Feste
Malvolio
Antonio
Valentine
Curio
Fabian
Officer
Priest
et al
I know i want to focus on Feste as the Lord of Misrule
and this being the end of his reign. I mos def wanna
go with the darker aspects... the end of the
celebration beginning on all hallows eve. i have this
idea that everybody is still in their halloween
costumes... from 2 months ago.
as far as where i want to set it... you know me... i
wanna set it in an imiginary world that we create as a
cast and develop the rules to our world in our
rehearsal. if we can get seven people with some
opening in the schedules, maybe we can do a week of
5-10 hr rehearsals and get some viewpoints in there.
What is our budget... if any?
Do we have gifted musicians?
Things to start saving...
Wire hangers, wire of anykind for constructivist
puppets and clothes.
Halloween masks for puppets (ask people to donate them
after h'ween)
Newspaper to stuff puppets
Christmas trees (for the end)
Christmas ornaments (for the end)
I'll also look for stuff from here and try to snag
some stuff
I think we wanna go ugly to beautiful, crazy to
contained, misrule to rule. we can talk more about
all of that later. i think this is enough to get
things goin.
let me know what ya think.
as far as the set. i would really like a beach so we
can use cheap lawn furniture where needed. sand can
be expensive and cumbersome with costumes. Saw dust
is a little easier to work with but, like sand, can
get caught in eyes and in butt cracks. is anybody
allergic? but if we have a black space with only this
tan area of beach i think it will look great and be
very simple. let the characters, puppets, and
costumes dress the space. of couse this all depends
on space. what do we know on that. do u have ideas
for spaces?
do we have a budget? i can throw in a lil but i don't
know how much yet.
with what i've drawn i think we can do it on very
little money... if any at all. if there are things we
need, let me know. i may be able to steal them and
bring them with me.
my big concern is people hating workin with the saw
dust. we will have to dampen it each night to control
the dust.
ok. let me know what ya think.
Not a fan of sawdust. I'd rather use sand. Sawdust hangs in the air
and will be uncomfy for even the audience.
The sketches don't show up very well. Maybe if I look at them on
another monitor...
We are still looking into spaces. Mike, one of our actors, is also a
really good costume designer and he showed me some photos today that
were pretty rad in a magazine. You would dig I know it. I'll try and
scan them on wednesday and send em yer way. We will have a budget. We
are sending out a fundraising letter next week. If you want to
contribute, we won't turn anything down, but your flight and creative
contribution are PLENTY. I think even without capitol from our
fundraising letter we could have 2000 bucks. Keep in mind that 1600
alone will go toward renting the space. We ain't in college anymore.
That leaves 400 for production and marketing. Morgan suggests going
BIG on marketing, as in 200. However, a pleasant return on the fund.
letters could increase our budget for this show. Once we did the
math on space rental we think that 2 nights for 3 weeks sounds
doable. Which makes me wonder if we'll have to clean up the sand
after each saturday perf. if they lease the space on sunday. We'll
cross that bridge when and if we come to it.
Will you do me a favor, any general discussion type stuff about the
show, would you post on the google group? Anything you want to keep
between us should go to gann...@mac.com or this two.hours email.
Everyone has access to this account but few ever use it. If you want
to find the group again go to google then groups then search for
seattle theater.

I've looked into hypoallergenic play sand. Home Depot carries it for
$4.35 for a 50 pound bag. I'd really like to use this as the floor...
proabably 10 bags will do us but that entirely depends on space. I'm
not thinking it's gonna be big, but correct me if I'm wrong. Set and
furniture can then be lawn chairs and blankets... stuff easily found
and pulled. The concept puts us on the imaginary island of Ilyria, a
magical club destination in the flavor of Ibiza. The sand or "sand
feel" is very important to me for the sake of movement, sound, bare
feet, and overall asthetic. I hope the hypoallergenic will help
Felicia. I know its not always the funnest to work with. I will keep
this in mind and try as hard as I can to make it as easy on people as
poosible. Lets talk about glasses and eye protection if that is
necessary.
I'm workin on a cutting and hope to have that to you all soon. Some of
you will have to operate puppets. Certainly Feste will. Probably a
few others too. That depends on the cutting too.
I know we need gels, but do lights come with the space? If not, I
really have to start thinkin about that.
What about painting in the space?
I know much of this is premature, but I'm puttin the questions out
there to be answered over the process of the show.
Hope all is well and see ya soon
Here's thoughts:
I hope to have a better idea on space within the next week. My concern for
the sand is we may need to find a way to clean it up and store it so we
don't have to pay rental fees throughout the week. I don't know...we'll see
what spaces pan out. I love the idea of the sand though, and I think we
should find a way to make it work regardless. I'm assuming we'll have access
to lighting instruments and some gels from the rental space, but we'll know
more soon.
Hmmm...Oh yes, I wanted to tell you, once you cut the piece, if you need
anyone to help out with paperwork/pre-pro stage management type things, I
would be glad to. If you want help marking out french scenes, marking quick
changes, etc. If that's something you prefer to do on your own, great, but I
thought I'd offer.
More soon,
morgan
PS - BRENDA, if you're out there, has Frank sent the Shunpike application?
And if so, will you forward it on and we'll get started on it. If not, I'll
pester him for it.

Thanks so much... I really would love ur help. Do we have an SM? When
I'm directing I have a hard time focusin on all of that organization,
but ur help will make it all the easier.
The sand is not something I'm married too, but, like you, I think we
should try to make it work. If it's a matter of buying some 10 gallon
trash bins to store it... I think I can make that happen. I know
Gannon told me, but when are auditions. He metioned something about
gettin the major players on tape soon. Regardless, when ya'll send the
auditions is it possible to burn it on a DVD as I don't have a VCR.
As I said to Gannon, don't go for a big space... unless u guys think
u'll have huge audiences, then by all means. I think the space can be
small, but since our set will be sparce, lets try to find unique
space... space that already is its own set. A space with visable
ladders or unusual seating. Just make sure the space can BLACK OUT.
Tell me if I'm just complicating and already complicated thing;)
thanks
We will make sure taped auditions are sent to you in DVD format. About when
those will happen, I think we can send company auditions soon. Community
auditions may need a little bit of time. I'd like to secure a space before
auditioning people. And also, we need a definitive character list/puppet
list/doubled roles decision for that. Perhaps that is something you've
discussed with Gannon. Or is that something you want to decide post
auditions? I've kinda let Gannon worry about auditions, so I'm out of the
loop I think.
I will keep all that in mind the space search. I would love to use an
alternative space like a bar or basement somewhere, but I'm a lighting
whore, I really want us to have access to whatever lighting effects we want,
so that narrows the playing field some. I'll keep you posted.
Hey, would you mind sending us a bio. I think it may come in handy at some
point.
As soon as you are ready with the script I will start on paperwork. Just let
me know if there's anything specific you want or don't want.
morgan

regarding auditions. here's a break down of puppets to people.
REAL
Orsino: strong actor, good body, will be shirtless.
Olivia: Beautiful, statuesque
Viola: Stong actress, able to cross dress easily
Sebastian: must be able to look like viola
Belch: Fat, Drunk, and Loud... my favorite type of person
Maria: Bawdy and willing to let her boobs upstage her
Aguecheek: Gay, gay, gay
Officer: Bouncer
Feste: FREAK in the most subtle of ways (This will be Gannon if he so
chooses)
PUPPET
Malvolio
Antonio
Valentine
Curio
Fabian
Priest
et al
I want to make the officer/captain a BOUNCER. Type is the most
important thing here. He doesn't need to be an amazing actor but he
needs to be BIG... or as big as we can get. Big and dumb a +.
I'm very confused on what i want for Malvolio. originally i wanted to
go with the whole idea of makin him look like shakespeare, but that
seems to be so outta left field with the rest of the concept so i think
we wanna go ULTRA goth. Gannon... think Jason Cutler. And i'm not
certain he should be a puppet. but a puppet of cutler makes me giggle.
I sitll need to think about all of this. its just not clear and
probably won't be until i get the cutting done... which i hope happens
very very soon.
I think Antonio should be a blow up sex doll in a sailors outfit. if
not the whole doll maybe we could just get the face of one and put it
on a puppet.
Gannon... Sound? I have a ton of music for this one, but anyone with a
good club sense can do it as long as the can edit and burn it to CD.
tell me if we need someone. i may know someone. what about Thor? I
have a idea that all music comes from Feste, in fact, the whole world
is his. This may involve making Feste not only operator of all puppets
man, but also SM. Kinda if i had mixed Martin and Jessie in As You
Like It. Can you DJ (spin)? Can you learn to fake it?
enough babblin...
Everyone needs a unifying concept... Broad and yet focused. I hope
this helps spawn imagination and doesn't impede anyone creatively.
CONCEPT: The Dark Beats of the Heart build to the Muiscke of the Soul.
Setting: The Island Resort Destination, Illyria, known for it's late
night club life and beautiful beaches.
Time: Now... or a reasonable fasimile.
gannon should have the cutting now. i emailed it today. i think we
should have a preliminary read thru just to make sure we are in the
right time frame (it should be under two hours with and intermission)
and to make sure it makes sense... even if it's only a few people
reading all of the parts. hopefully we can tape it.
enjoy.
I received my BA in theater arts in 2005 from New
Mexico State University and am very excited to begin
my career with 2 Hours' Traffic. I've acted in many
productions at NMSU, as well as community theaters,
directed and produced for collaborative projects among
my artistic peers, acted as dramaturg and dialect
coach, and most recently did an outreach tour for
Creede Repertory Theater in Creede, Colorado.
