The systematics and field identification of Band-rumped Storm-Petrels ('castro complex') remains one of the major challenges in seabirding. Multiple populations occur in both the Atlantic and Pacific, and some remain very poorly known.

The current issue of the Bulletin of the British Ornithologists’ Club includes an illustrated review article by Bob Flood and colleagues tying together what's known and not known about the population that likely breeds on islands within the Gulf of Guinea off Central Africa. The article includes recent at sea photographs by Will Wagstaff. Affinities to other population including those from Cape Verde are discussed.
