This will not help us find a direct male COWAN line, but in searching
the Selkirkshire Message Board tonight for Cowans, I came across a post
looking for TAITs:

<< Robert TAIT , born about 1755,mariied Agnes Cowan/Cowen in or near
Ettrick about 1780. Their son William was born about 1784 and married
Mary Simpson in Peebles, 1815. >>

This would put Agnes' birth about 1760. She could possibly fit right in
with the supposed James' sons, which I have as: William born 1752,
Andrew born 1767, Thomas born 1771 and Walter in 1778.

Does anyone have different dates for this supposed family? I say
supposed because I have never seen proof of any of this. I really need
to read those parish films! Does anyone have evidence of this family
besides family stories?

Research note: Did you realize that you can search the Message Boards
one at a time, all at a time, and a region at a time? The Locality
boards are special in that under the Search box, where you find the
choices to search THIS board or all boards, you also see something like
this:

Boards > Localities > United Kingdom and Ireland > Scotland >
Selkirkshire > General

In the case of Selkirkshire, the General board is the only one for the
county. However, you can click on Scotland, and search only the
Scotland boards for your surname or other search term, or even all of
UK & Ireland. All the other locality boards are similarly searchable.
It can come in really handy!

I have seen other info on this line. One of the patrons that comes into the
FHC that I help out (now for 10 yrs) is a Tait researcher. Of course, when
she found this Cowan info, she brought it to my attention. I will forward
the message on to her and see what she has to say. She has made the Parish
Records really talk to her. The years that I need 1720 and before have been
very hard to read. The post wasn't from Linda Friedland was it??

Laura,

This was a thread involving "tai...@houston.rr.com", James Hart, John
Tait & Heather Graham. I haven't seen Agnes on a film for myself yet.

Here is what Linda had to say about it.

That Wm and Jean Scott Cowan - in my Cowan group we have a lot of
Cowan-Scott marriages if I remember correctly.
