Toronto — In experiments of potential ways to treat autism, Haleigh Japp has tried the “love hormone” known as oxytocin. Eli Gibson has taken daily doses of fish oil. And, after years of making do with medications developed for other conditions, a small number of children and adults have tested a drug that, for the first time, targets autism’s core feature of social withdrawal. Spurred by their families, the volunteers for these experimental treatments are seeking ways to improve their attention spans, become more connected to people and tune into the world more fully. Japp, an 18-year-old student with high-functioning autism, took oxytocin to see if a hormone known for boosting trust and social bonding could help her read other people’s emotions better. Four-year-old Eli was given fish oil containing omega-3 fatty acids to see if it could reduce inflammation in the brain and improve his learning skills.
