My adventurous side has gotten the better of me and I'm planning to drive to Crested Butte from Denver on Sunday before the Summit.  If anyone would like to join me, you are more than welcome.  I will most likely leave the airport around noon.

Quick question: what kind of vehicle should I rent for the drive? I know a 4-wheel drive vehicle is a must in the winter, but what about in the summer/fall?  I usually rent a compact car (I like small cars and they are cheap to rent), but should I rent something bigger?

Regular cars are just fine over cottonwood pass.

You'll definitely enjoy the drive.

I'll be driving up Sunday; I was thinking I'd probably hit the road a bit earlier than your planned time but maybe we can think about convoying. I need to be somewhere else the next Saturday (leaving either late Friday or very early Saturday morning) so actually riding together won't work.
