Some of the points made are easily contestable.
(1) Every country on earth retains unfettered rights to revoke Visas without assigning or bound to give any reason. It is done by USA & many other countries routinely. India has done it in the past and recent incidence took place in April of last year.
(2) While I value freedom including artistic freedom, I find it a rank bad taste to put any country’s Flag on the Doormat or Gandhi on the flip flops. And since in every society the norms regarding tastes and their indulgences differ (what is done & what is not done), so also would exist prohibitions. And that per say I would not necessarily hold as wrong.

Otherwise, the point made against Publicity Hungry Patriotism is valid including how the forces of “globalisation” once unleashed cannot be selectively resisted.

Sushma Swaraj's Patriotic Jingoism:
Aakar Patel's problem with her actions is different:

First - that this is not a nation that functions on the basis of Rules & Laws but arbitrary and knee-jerk decision making. If Amazon's officials had secured their visas through proper paperwork, under what rule or law was Swaraj threatening to cancel them? If she felt a crime has been committed, as a law abiding citizen she should have registered a FIR or a complaint. Instead she fired a twitter fatwa, acting like a despot.

Second - Amazon is a global marketplace. If one looks hard enough, there will be something causing offence to someone or the other's god or guru or prophet. And I can guarantee that this has not changed with the removal of doormat product. Indeed, the reports next day said there were shoes being sold with the Indian flag. What will Swaraj do the next time something like this pops up!

Third - This sort of angry public nationalism comes very easily to our leaders. Last year in this time we were again discussing nationalism Vs JNU students. Smriti Irani threatened to cut off her head. Rajnath Singh said LeT and Hafiz Saeed were behind the slogan shouting. NIA was apparently going to probe the thing. Offending youth were arrested and one of them beaten up while in custody. After all this drama, what was the ultimate result? The BJP govt has not filed the charge sheet. *Raat gayi, baat gayi*. This fraudulent, ''dhongi'' nationalism; this showy nautanki; emotional but insubstantial nationalism is the same type that Swaraj has again shown.

It is a waste of national time and energy and ministers, particularly those carrying heavy responsibilities, should not participate in the circus.
