 JANUARY 2024 UPDATES

What's next?

2024 is here – and the Pershing Bikeway project continues to make great progress! This month, crews will pave new segments of the bikeway before painting the bikeway striping between Upas Street and Florida Drive. Additionally, crews will continue constructing new curbs and a second underground storm drain system near Balboa Park Golf Course. Access to the golf course will not be interrupted during this work.

Finally, as crews make progress along the southern portion of the project, one of the last segments of the bikeway and sidewalk will be constructed, along with the paving of the new bike and pedestrian bridge.

How might this affect you?

Nearby residents, businesses, and travelers can expect intermittent noise (including OSHA-required back-up alarms) and lights as our crews complete this work. We will take all reasonable steps to minimize impacts to the community.

The whole construction site along Pershing Drive remains closed to the public until further notice. Please use the temporary, protected shared-use path on the west side of Pershing Drive.

What happened last month?
-
Near Pershing Drive and Redwood Street, crews continued to install irrigation, landscaping, and street lighting. Next, crews paved sections of the bikeway between the new roundabout and north of Redwood Street.

On Pershing Drive between Upas Street and Florida Drive, crews constructed additional curb and gutter, constructed the first of two underground storm drain systems that will eliminate or greatly reduce flooding in the area, and planted trees in the roadway median. Finally, at the northwest corner of Florida Drive, crews implemented minor traffic control to accommodate the reconstruction of the curb and ramp.

At the intersection of Pershing Drive and Florida and 26th streets, the roadway was reduced to one lane in each direction as crews constructed two new medians. Crews also removed old roadway above and adjacent to the city yard to prepare for the installation of the final segment of the sidewalk and bikeway. Lastly, a ramp was installed at B and 19th Streets to make the bikeway and sidewalk accessible for people of all ages and abilities.

 ABOUT THE PROJECT
|
|
The 2.3-mile Pershing Bikeway will improve north-south connectivity for people who bike and walk through Balboa Park and between North Park and Downtown San Diego. The project will recreate Pershing Drive as a “low-stress” street that will promote safety for people biking, walking, rolling, and driving. Helping fulfill the vision laid out in the 2021 Regional Plan, the Pershing Bikeway will improve access to Balboa Park amenities and will serve as a critical regional connection for people who travel through the area.
