Not a single comment on the new EP?

I loved hearing Jay and Jennifer beef up the sound a bit. Another solid group of songs. If Sam stopped making music for the Long Play now, I would have gotten my money's worth.

Hi Everyone,

Greetings from Baltimore, where we are still digging out from back-to-back blizzards and learning to be patient as major roads are still down to one and two lanes from three.

I waited to listen to the new EP until I can really pay attention, and am just blown away. What a group of songs! Definitely brightened my day. And the World Cafe interview was great too.

Have a great week.

When do we get to order Long Play t-shirts? ;)

Eleanor

Hi SamFans! :)

Let me add my voice to the chorus in praise of Sam's latest release. Sam seems to be more playful with this particular set ... I especially like when she is hitting the higher notes to bring to the fore the meaning of a lyric without slapping you in the face. The drums are fun to listen to as well.

I really hope this venture into self-produced and self-sales is a model that is working out for Sam. I honestly worry if she is able to make a living. My concern is selfish ... I want Sam to continue creating great music.

At the same time, I seem to be yearning for traditional hard copies of the albums ... in CDs. I would be willing to buy the same albums in hard copy, just so I can have something physical to hold on to while listening. I wonder if Sam would consider doing a handmade hardcopy of the albums?

In the meantime, I am going to keep re-listening so the songs swirl around in my head without my mp3 player or computer.

Hugs! :)

I guess it seemed most appropriate to post my thoughts om the "Magic
For Everybody" on the Long Play site itself (on Sam's page) so I
forgot about doing it here! Thanks for starting the ball rolling,
Bruce!

But yes, I agree that we've already got our money's worth and it seems
to me that the music has been getting even stronger with each release.
I love the slight return to the chamber pop sound of the first two
"Sam" albums, with a little more electric guitar and a more poppy
style. She's never dropped her quality at all but I was starting to
wish for a move away from what has become her standard sound, just for
the sake of some variation. She continues to write some important and
thoughtful lyrics but still keeping a light approach insead of being
all portentous, and by doing so actually gives her ideas even more
weight, paradoxically.

So yeah, all good music-wise!

Also, like Darren, I do feel that it would be good to have the whole
lot on CD as well, but I understand that it adds a bit of complication
to this otherwise simple way of doing things. It's also a little
frustrating that I keep telling my friends in real life and online how
rbilliant the music is, but they can't just buy a CD or some iTunes/
mp3s - they have to commit to $50 and the minor but perceptible
complication of signing up and keeping an eye out for new music - OK
for a diehard fan but not for a casual listener. It's nice to be part
of the secret society, but I wish the music was more widely heard!
Even being able to post a link to audio or video of a particular song
on Facebook would be good.

I'm not sure if Sam is making any money at this, but she should make a few bucks from the Crazy Heart soundtrack. :-)

I also posted my comments on the long play site.  Personally I think Lever Pulled Down is one of the best tracks she's written in ages, and that's saying a lot.

I heard on the World Cafe Live interview that her next EP will be country songs.  I am very excited to here what Sam's take on country sounds like.

I have to admit that the new EP didn't quite grab me initially the way
the first two did, but after a few listens I am really digging it.
"Merry and Bright" is a stunner, it reminds me a little of the group
Camera Obscura. The production makes it seem like you're right there
in the recording studio
with Sam and the other musicians. I'm enjoying the remake of the
Gilmore Girls track - the original recording, while a nice little
song, always seemed recorded at too fast a tempo.

I listened to the version of "Reflecting Light" on the Crazy Heart
soundtrack. It's somewhat different, slightly slower (more
countryish?) and an alternate Sam vocal.

I also share the opinion that The Long Play has already made the
investment worthwhile. And there's so much more to come!
