SCOTTISH SALSA CONTACTS
SCOTTISH INTERNET INFO
Anyone can access current Salsalink and Compendiums for Scottish Salsa info, sent via Google, on: http://groups.google.com/group/SalsaLink/ This Google Salsalink web-based info is a complementary back up to Graeme Mathieson's Salsaholics. Salsaholics is THE website for Scotland's Salsa information at: http://www.salsaholics.org. Try it's Links page too. Organisers and teachers can now enter and change their own information on Salsaholics. So that is the best place to go for up-to-date comprehensive info about Salsa Classes across Scotland - you can ask for by teacher, place and day-of-week. For Salsalink, Tayside, Aberdeen, SE Scotland, or Glasgow Google Group email lists, send empty email to Salsalink...@googlegroups.com or TaysideSals...@googlegroups.com, AberdeenSal...@googlegroups.com, SE-Scotland-S...@googlegroups.com or join up through the "Email List" tab on Salsaholics.

HOW Salsalink WORKS
Nick works Salsalink with lots of help from everyone else. In June 2004 Rohan Cragg initiated the Google Salsalink to deliver it.
Salsalink CONTENTS
In Salsalink you'll find the programme of non-weekly events for the next few weeks, updating of regular venues and Salsa teaching, new information about future events, and other stuff too. At the end is an updated list of all Salsa teachers and organisers, etc, and this background and explanation of how it all works.
"Salsalink Extra" mailings are sent, but stricter deadlines for main Salsalinks will keep them to a minimum. Nick keeps and updates a Compendium of Regular Venues and Non-Weekly Events. A 3rd Compendium of Salsa Teaching is now taken off the Salsaholics database. Compendiums can be accessed at Google and they go out every few months to everyone. The Salsalink Compendiums have a key role in helping organisers integrate their planning.
AIMS
The aim of Salsalink is to inform all Salsa dancers about the Salsa scene's activities across Scotland - but regular classes are left to Salsaholics to cover. Put together in Edinburgh, Salsalink requires good information from elsewhere. The aim is still to be regular, fun, comprehensive (except for classes) and brief (no big downloads). If you want fuller information, some organisers run their own websites and direct email lists.
CONTRIBUTING TO Salsalink
Get your info to Nick at nick....@virgin.net. Please use ordinary email format. Send it when you like, but note the published deadlines. Salsalink and Nick will do our best, but don't blame us if we aren't perfect, nor if your events aren't perfect either!!
HISTORY
Salsalink began like this: A personal freelance email list grew out of a printed non-Salsa Edinburgh dancers phone contact list in January 1998 – we couldn't get even a handful of people together to go dancing over the 1997 festive season lull! Salsa dancers got added in 1999. Emailing slowly grew alongside. On 1st April 2001 the first named Latinburgh Newsletter was sent out. 2003 renamed the Newsletter to become just Latinburgh but the edition number continued. Given the pros and cons of more local versus Scottish e-newsletters, we went Scottish during 2003. Recognising this and covering Salsa rather than "Latin", we renamed ourselves Scottish Salsalink for 2004 - Salsalink for short. But the continuing edition number provides a connection with Latinburgh. So the first Salsalink was "No 114". There is still no formal status or organisation behind Salsalink. In June 2004, Rohan Cragg initiated our Salsalink Google Group.
A SCOTTISH SALSA NETWORK
In October 2001, it was useful to create a network of those interested in looking after the overall Salsa scene in Edinburgh. It was called the Edinburgh Salsa Network (ESN). With some meetings and email discussion, it helped firm up the collaboration and the role of email networking via what was then Latinburgh. There has since been no overt need for ESN, but "behind the scenes" Nick still actively co-ordinates and uses those Scotland-wide email lists for teachers and organisers - for example to share requests or opportunities that help plan classes and events, to develop thinking about complicated issues, to get extra access codes for Salsaholics website in order to change info there, and to check Salsalink information before it's sent out. There is therefore still a Scottish Salsa Network running behind Salsalink, an informal network of teachers and organisers actively interested in developing the Salsa scene. It is also now a Google Group. Nick aims to add all teachers and organisers to this list - contact him if you want to be on it too.
People have largely confirmed that there is not a place for a formal membership Salsa Society. Salsalink, Salsaholics and the other open email lists complete the informal network which aims to connect, publicise and shape up all Salsa dance activities around Scotland by collaboratively integrating and supporting all the organisers and activities. To update the organisers lists (see the long blurb at the end of Salsalinks) or to join in more actively in the network, please email your interest to: nick....@virgin.net
Since April 2003, we have got together with Graeme Mathieson's www.salsaholics.org as THE internet website for Scotland's Salsa information. This is now our Scottish Salsa scene's "front door" as advertised in the Metro newspaper in 2003 - an advert that continued several times a week until autumn 2007, even though the payment stopped at Easter 2004!
PLEASE NOTE
Keep telling every Salsero who doesn't know about it, to get on Salsalink's list. That means new learners especially. There is no other effective publicity of Salsa than by person to person. There are fliers to advertise Salsalink and Salsaholics - ask for some. If others don’t have email, offer to be their link - or show them how easy an internet cafe can be!
Salsalink and Salsaholics are FREE and have no funds - so it has to be done by internet. Email lists also make updating simple.
Salsalink is sent as 'blind' copies, and Google sends emails individually, so no one should get anyone else's email address or lists to spam you with. If it seems a genuine request, I will consider giving an individual enquirer an individual's email address. Let me know if you don't want me to do that. Please use the logo that's on the fliers and in the Compendiums.
CHANGING EMAIL ADDRESSES
If you haven't yet, go to Create an account with Google by clicking Sign in (top right) at http://groups.google.com/ Just because you get the emails, and can read the home page, doesn't mean you can get by Google's "front door" without joining it. Use your old email that Google knows you by. Then click on My Account at top right of screen so that, on the left, you can change your email etc to the new one. This will apply in one go to all Google Groups you belong to. Lots of other goodies there too, including Unscubscribing easily.
PS
Reduce email scams and spams. Any message asking you to pass it on to everyone else is going to clog everyone's works up. Check out scam details on: http://hoaxinfo.com/madd.htm
