"Enough
Of Blood And Tears, Enough!" -Yitzhak
Rabin
| | |
20 years ago this
week, at a peace rally much like the one OneVoice
Israel led last week, Yitzhak Rabin was gunned
down by a Jewish extremist who hoped to destroy
prospects of a two-state solution by assassinating
the Prime Minister.
As mentioned in
a New
Yorker article this week, "if the
story of Yitzhak Rabin and Yigal Amir has anything
to teach, it’s that individuals matter”. While the
piece accurately places the power for change in
the hands of everyday people, it attempts to show
that these hopes for peace, forged by brave
leaders and encouraged by responsible citizens,
died with the Prime Minister--but this assertion
is far from correct.
In fact, now more than
ever, OneVoice activists’ presence is being felt
on the streets; addressing the recent surge in
violence and amplifying the voices of moderates,
who are sick of bloodshed and extremism, and want
their leaders to provide a vision and a plan for
an end to the violence, occupation, and the
realization of the two-state solution.

Israel signs saying
"Khalas! (Enough!)"

In Israel,
activists joined crowds of thousands saying
“Enough!” to the extremism, violence and the lack
of brave leadership. At a rally in Rabin
square at the memorial for the slain Prime
Minister, OneVoice Israel activists echoed
the words Rabin himself used when he declared at
the signing of the Oslo Accords, “Enough of blood
and tears, enough”.

In Palestine, our
staff and activists continue to call for a stop to
the violence and extremism, all the while
supporting their fellow countrymen on the path
toward statehood and an end to the occupation.
Now more than ever, OneVoice Palestine
executive director Samer Makhlouf’s words ring
true: “Violence will trap us in the cycle
of actions and reactions, which will lead to a new
cycle of bloodshed…not to independence”.

OneVoice was
founded on the principal that the power for change
is in the hands of the people. As long as everyday
Israelis and Palestinians refuse to be enemies,
and desire the peace that only two sovereign and
secure states can bring, OneVoice will continue to
amplify those voices, challenge extremism, and
work for the future that Yitzhak Rabin gave his
life in order to achieve.
