The Transfiguration of Our Lord Jesus Christ and The Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

This is a collection of music for the Feast of the Dormition (“Falling Asleep,” Repose, or Assumption into Heaven) of the Virgin Mary (August 15), and the Feast of the Transfiguration of Our Lord Jesus Christ, which occurs during the time of preparation for the Dormition (August 6).

The collection begins with music for the Transfiguration of Christ, as recorded in the Gospel of St Luke 9: 28-36.  In the two verses before this account, Our Lord foretells the Transfiguration, when His Disciples Peter, James, and John “shall not taste of death, till they see the kingdom of God,” as a foretaste of His Second Coming in Glory.

The bodily death, resurrection, and ascension of the Virgin Mary is not recorded in Scripture, but was witnessed by the Holy Apostles and recorded in contemporaneous sources, as well as oral tradition. (2 Thess 2:15).  The Feast is seen by many Christians as the prototype of Christ’s promise of a blessèd end for “those who endure to the end.” (Mt 10:22, 24:13; Mk 13:13; Js 5:11)
