Hi all,

Here’s some info from Neal Peacocke at the City on the status of Powell Street. I have highlighted the sentence on public consultation. When/if it comes to that, we’ll let you know.

Currently there is only the section of Powell Street west of Clark Drive, in the vicinity the proposed overpass, that is designated as part of the MRN (as shown on the map provided by TransLink).

At this time, there is no commitment from either the City or TransLink to add the rest of Powell Street (Main Street to Nanaimo) to the MRN. Last year, TransLink began a process of reviewing the role of the MRN, including new guidelines for managing Major Roads and related cost-sharing programs.  As part of this process, City staff were asked for their preliminary suggestions on what street segments might be considered for additions to the MRN, subject to further review by both TransLink and municipalities.  City staff suggested a number of segments as possibilities, including the remaining segments of Powell Street between Main Street and Nanaimo Street.  We do not expect TransLink to complete their assessment until early 2012.   If they support some or all of Powell Street being added, City staff would refer it, along with any other proposed additions to public consultation, likely through the City's Transportation 2040 Plan process. After receiving feedback from the community, a list of proposed additions would then be presented to City Council for their review.  The last step would be for TransLink to approve the final additions.
