Despite this as the first official day into the Pilot Project, I have witnessed a dramatic increase in container traffic on McGill Street over the last week. It seems that many, if not most trucks (unclear about numbers since no traffic counters have been set up this north of Hastings) are heading northbound on Nanaimo to McGill. If I may use one word that comes to mind...UNACCEPTABLE. I am quite dumbfounded by this giant crack in the master plan? Once again, it seems up to residents to pool together to voice concerns. I have sent a request also to Neal Peacocke
(604 871-6472) at the city to have counters set up north of Dundas (rather than at Franklin and Nanaimo where it is now), at the base of Clarke Drive (to count the number of trucks turning onto Powell) and also the entry to Commissioner Street at McGill (to note incoming direction of trucks, either west or east). Of course, Hastings too will be hugely impacted and although it is mainly commercial, it is a high pedestrian street with a growing number of residential apartments. I am not convinced that this proposed route is the answer either, so feedback is important.
Still, I am amazed with the efforts residents went to at the beginning of the summer and am proud that we are such a caring and vocal community. I ask that other neighbours please stay involved through duration of the pilot project.
