I recently wrote (see below for my original message) to Robin Silvetser, President and Chief Executive Officer of Port Metro Vancouver, about the problem of increased Port-bound truck traffic along Nanaimo Street. I'm attaching his response for your review.
I hope we can work toward a constructive resolution that satisfies all parties. I appreciate that you've contacted me about this matter, as I rely very much on feedback from our community to help with federal matters.
Sincerely,
Libby

Dear Mr. Silvester,
Further to my letters of June 28th and July 20th, concerning truck container
traffic on Nanaimo street, I am writing again as a result of ongoing
representations from constituents who are still working on this issue.
I appreciate that Port officials have met with local community
representatives, and have made progress to address community concerns. I
understand that the trial period to re-direct container trucks has been
extended to January 25, 2012.
I would, however, appreciate some clarification from Port Metro Vancouver on
the time line to re-open the Clark Drive entrance. I believe it has been
suggested that it will re-open in 2014. Is this indeed the case?
If so, is there a commitment to work with the City of Vancouver and the
local community to ensure that no container trucks servicing the Port are
using Nanaimo or Renfrew streets in the meantime?
I'd also like to inquire if there are plans to invest in shortsea shipping
to alleviate traffic congestion, and GHG emissions. I know this initiative
is underway elsewhere (for example Annacis Island). It seems like a sound
investment and I wonder if a similar plan is proposed for the East Vancouver
Port area.
I look forward to your reply.
Sincerely,
Libby Davies
