Dear Community Member,

Further to the update below, the Truck Traffic Pilot Program is being extended until January 25, 2012 to allow additional time to determine a longer term approach to the movement of drayage container trucks through City of Vancouver.

Port Metro Vancouver will continue to monitor Nanaimo Street throughout the extension of the Pilot Program.

The public comment period continues until January 25, 2012.  We encourage residents and businesses to contact us during this time at 604.665.9066 or email Public_...@portmetrovancouver.com.  Thank you for sending your comments on the Pilot Program to date.

Dear Community Member,

You are receiving this email because you have expressed interest in the Truck Traffic Pilot Program.  Please forward this update to those you know who may be interested in this information.

Recognizing and responding to recent community concerns about the volume of trucks on Nanaimo Street, Port Metro Vancouver implemented a Truck Traffic Pilot Program requiring drayage container trucks to use designated Major Road Network truck routes only to Port facilities.  The Pilot Program began August 25 and is scheduled to run until November 25.  During this time, in addition to monitoring truck volumes on Nanaimo Street, we are accepting public comments at 604.665.9066 or email Public_...@portmetrovancouver.com and we encourage people to provide us their feedback.

As part of evaluating the Pilot Program and determining next steps, Port Metro Vancouver and the City of Vancouver will consider public comments.  Public comments from community members will be summarized and posted to Port Metro Vancouver’s website by the end of the year.

Preliminary results of the Pilot Program indicate significant success. During the first 30 days of the pilot, the number of drayage container trucks on Nanaimo Street between Broadway and Hastings averaged less than 2 per day.  The comment period remains open until the end of the 90 days.  Since the start of the Pilot Program, PMV has received 29 comments from members of the public.  The nature of these comments is as follows:

·          7 comments noting an increase in drayage container trucks on Renfrew Street, thereby impacting that community;

·          6 requests to open Clark Drive entrance to PMV for drayage container trucks;

·          6 comments noting an increase in container truck volume on Nanaimo Street north of Hastings and continuing on McGill Street, thereby impacting that community;

·          5 expressions of general support for the Truck Traffic Pilot Program, noting the reduction in numbers of drayage container trucks on Nanaimo Street;

·          3 requests for monitoring at additional locations;

·          3 reports of “trucks” (not specified if drayage container trucks) continuing to use Nanaimo Street;

·          1 comment noting there is too much drayage container truck traffic on Knight Street; and

·          1 request for a better system for distribution of trucks on City streets.

In addition to comments from the community, PMV has also been advised by trucking companies that the trucking community is experiencing some challenges with the Hastings Street section of the route, but regardless have been very responsive in adjusting their haul routes.

Port Metro Vancouver and City of Vancouver have been discussing an extension of the Pilot Program and will be meeting on October 21 to work out the details.  An extension of the Pilot Program will allow the time to determine a longer term approach to the movement of drayage container trucks through City of Vancouver.

Please continue to communicate comments by phone (604.665.9066) or email (Public_...@portmetrovancouver.com).

Kind regards,

PORT METRO VANCOUVER
