Many of you have probably already reviewed the notes from our meeting with the City of Vancouver regarding solutions to the container truck problem in East Van.

The container trucks bound for the Port will have had one month to adjust to the MRN (Major Route Network) map by August 25th.  At that time the MRN Port suggested solution will be enforced by the Port for a trail period of 3 months.

During these 3 months the City and the Port will need to know if this solution is a success.  Success means keeping the Port bound container trucks on the MRNs without heavy negative impacts on the neighbours along the MRN.

Keeping that in mind, we would like to ask you to keep an eye out and talk to your neighbours or anyone else you know who lives or works near an MRN or any route that trucks might try to take that are not part of the MRN.

For example, if congestion on Hastings is problematic, or if businesses are negatively affected by the truck traffic, or if the trucks start taking alternate routes like Renfrew or Powell/Dundas and causing undue problems in those areas, please call the city.  Informal counts, pictures and video are useful, and please do keep track of any details you notice.  Please remember to stay safe.

We have to make sure the city knows if this is working or not.  Please help us by calling Neal Peacocke of the City’s Engineering Department at: 604-871-6472, or email him at neal.p...@vancouver.ca

Here is a link to the MRN map if you need to have a look again:

Appreciating your help,

Hello all,

as you for sure are all aware, today is the big day! So I am very surprised, that I haven't heard from anyone here today, as I heard for sure the noise as of min. 40! trucks by now. I live on Nanaimo Street and East 3rd.
I called Neal from the City of Vancouver, which is on vacation until August 29th.
I also called and left a message for Tony from Port Vancouver.

It seems the truckers are either not aware off the no driving rule, or are just simply disrespectful :(

Why is there, esepcially on the first day, no police to be seen, to make sure the restrictions beeing enforced??
I am not saying to right away revoke a truckers licence, but at least to give them a one time warning, so they get the message.

I love to hear from others to hear about this and what to do next.

Best regards,

Perry Booth

hello All:

This is a pity, especially after we were assured that enforcement would be in place and obvious.

However, the City has also succeeded in having the trucks divert to using North Clark, Powell/Dundas and McGill as this IS part of the MRN route. You can imagine the result in the McGill neighbourhood.

This is a community issue and needs proper community consultation with all areas effected NOT just 1 or another.

I urge you to write the city and the Port and demand to reopen the Clark Entrance as well as real mitigation efforts by the City not short term, ill thought out schemes .

Regards

Dave Pasin

Thanks for your comments, Dave, and for all your hard work and encouragement as we resolve this complex issue.

The official MRN map, which has been published, posted and widely distributed by Translink does not show that area of Clark north of Hastings and Powell to Nanaimo as part of the MRN route, and in consultation with the City they stated to our group that this area is not part of the MRN route system.  The City receives funding from Translink for the MRN routes and this, apparently, is not one.  It is my understanding that this is one of the reasons why the City have continued to focus on the Hastings/Cassiar/Bridgway route, as planned.  If the trucks follow this route, there should be very little impact for the residents on Nanaimo north of Hastings and on McGill.

My understanding to date is that the MRN route is a measure proposed by the Port to the City as a means to manage the trucking traffic rather than re-opening Clark Drive, which the Port prefers not to do due in part to the interference and management of the railway switches that are located near the Clark Drive entrance.  The Port is planning to do some infrastructure work to address the problem of the railway switches in future.  We're as of yet unclear on the timeline for this work or what happens to the trucks in the meantime.

Anyone who finds that trucks are not using the mandated route: we encourage you to contact the City or the Port as stated in previous posts.  During this 90 day test period it is important that both parties know if trucks are following directions in order to assess whether this 'solution' will work.

One of the concerns our working group has expressed is that there seems to be some variation to the information that is being distributed, and so we are working hard to try to provide as much non-biased, non-partisan info as we can.   As I've mentioned to you, Dave, we are concerned that the issues could become partisan in an election campaign and this is one of the reasons why our group formed.  Given this,  people are welcome to post opinions and experiences on the google group platform and we will do our best to continue to outline the latest info we receive on the issue.

Thanks again,

Cynthia
