Dear Sir/Madam
Greetings from ICRISAT-WWF Project!
After our successful field demos and policy advocacy work as part of upscaling SRI in India, we have now
over the past one year started the Sustainable Sugarcane Initiative (SSI), a system of better management practices
in sugarcane that involves use of less water, less seed and less fertilizers through organic method of cultivation to achieve more yields and profits to farmers and millers alike. It is an alternative to the conventional seed, water and space intensive sugarcane cultivation. A SSI Training Manual was released in May 2009.
Now we have initiated the SSI newsletter titled “SUGARCANE MATTERS” which sums up our initial experiences in the farmers’ fields of Tamil Nadu, Punjab, Orissa, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and industrial trial plots in Uttar Pradesh. Through this newsletter, we hope to build an useful platform for others to write, discuss and exchange views regarding innovative and better management practices for improving sugarcane production in India and any other important issues pertaining to the sugar sector We do hope that the platform we have created in the form of this newsletter would prove useful for you to share and contribute your experiences, events, studies, field trials and any other issues on sugarcane.
Find attached the SSI newsletter “Sugarcane Matters” , the first issue for your information and feedback.
We look forward to receiving your critical feed back and inputs to improve and take it further.
With regards,
Padma
