Mark Slobin's work on "affinity groups" and Etienne Wenger's "communities of practice" (this latter so widely applied as to sometimes seem unrecognizable) might be good places to look.
BTW, I am currently supervising an Hons thesis on Sacred Harp in Melbourne & Sydney, Australia!
