You are cordially invited to the symposium "Music and Islam: Sonic
Dimensions of Piety, Politics, and Pleasure" to be held at Tufts
University
on Friday, April 13, 2012. This symposium will feature presentations
by
renowned scholars and performers of music in the world of Islam, and
will
provide global perspectives on the diversity of the musical practices
and
how they articulate with local political, historical, religious,
sociocultural, and aesthetic contexts. It will challenge monolithic
interpretations of Islam and provide a forum for understanding the
multiple
and complex forces that shape (and are shaped by) musical expression.
Martin
Stokes (Oxford University), the 2010 recipient of the Royal Musical
Association¹s Dent Medal and recipient of the 2011 Alan Merriam Prize,
will
deliver the keynote address. The symposium and concert are free and
open to
the public, and no tickets are required. For the full program, please

p.m. in the Varis Lecture Hall at the Perry and Marty Granoff Music
Center
on the Tufts Medford/Somerville campus. The Boston-based Al-Noor
Ensemble
will perform a concert including Sufi, Moroccan Andalusian, and Syrian
Sufi
music in the Distler Performance Hall at 7:30 p.m., co-sponsored by
the
Tufts Middle Eastern Studies program.
