Since our participation in alignment discussions have previously been
interpreted and reported to various audiences as our endorsement of
this alignment plan, we have decided to refrain from the text
selection survey.
The nature of Language Arts is such that the skills are the content.
(literary analysis, identifying themes, persuasive writing, vocabulary
development, etc.) The texts, then, are the examples. When teachers
tailor the examples to the individuals in the classroom, while keeping
their expectations high, they develop deeper cognitive engagement than
when there is a one size fits all approach.
And so, we believe we should open a conversation about the shift from
text alignment as our starting point to that of skills alignment.
