I hope this email finds you well. I would like to formally invite you to our upcoming virtual event: ‘Decades of HIV CARE’. This event is open to colleagues, clients, patients, and the general public. Please feel free to post and share widely!
June 5, 2021 marks the 40th anniversary of the first description of Pneumocystis pneumonia of what we know today as AIDS in five patients in Los Angeles – in the Centers for Disease Control’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR). These observations, by Dr. Michael Gottlieb from UCLA, and Dr. Joel Weisman began to define the challenges that would shape the research and treatment agendas of the subsequent 40 years of a global pandemic.
In recognition of this historic milestone, UCLA Health’s Center for Clinical AIDS Research and Education (CARE) will be presenting an HIV/AIDS 40-year retrospective virtual event. This will include a panel discussion with some of the top HIV researchers in the country, who will share their personal stories and lessons from the early years of the epidemic, as well as their hopes for the future of HIV prevention, care, treatment, and research.
We will also take this opportunity to recognize and honor the upcoming retirement of Dr. Ronald Mitsuyasu. He has made remarkable contributions in specialty patient care here at UCLA, nationally, and globally in HIV oncology and gene therapy research. Dr. Mitsuyasu established UCLA’s first clinical program for HIV/AIDS care in 1981. This was prompted by his early experience with diagnosis and treatment of Kaposi’s Sarcoma and other HIV/AIDS-associated malignancies. From that nascent program, UCLA Health’s CARE Center was ultimately established. His seminal work and contributions, in gathering and leading a multidisciplinary team of dedicated HIV specialists, has led the CARE Center to its current status as an internationally recognized clinical research center that provides cutting-edge HIV care and treatment to more than 1,200 patients annually.
