This is really high tech! When you look through the magic window you
have 3-D! The stereopticon - a triumph of modern technology - from the
1890's. We've had this since I was a little girl - a full library of
various national parks. Something we just thought you needed to know -
LOL!

Looks a lot like mine. Is it one of the mass-market stereopticons made by Keystone?

There are a large number of stereographs on the Library of Congress website. You can obtain a modern viewer that allows you to view the stereo pairs on your monitor for about $3.

http://www.berezin.com/3d/3dglasses.htm#StereoCard

For $5 you can get 4 pairs of 3-D glasses and a Card Viewer.

It is possible to view these images in stereo with the naked eye. But you have to shrink them down on screen to a considerable extent in order to get them within the crossover range of your eyes. It works exactly the same way those stereographic 3D cartoons in the Sunday newspaper work. Some people can't get the hang of how to do this, so don't feel bad if it doesn't work for you. And yes, it can do a number on your eye muscles!

I was always able to do that exercise in the paper but my husband couldn't. Interesting about the eye strain - I often wondered about that.
