I bought it because I thought it would improve iPhoto. BUT - it seems
to be trying to take over completely. First - the bloody Cloud'. As I
understand it, everything ideally is filed in the Cloud. Everything
can be a lot & if you reach a certain point, you have to pay for more
file space. So I want to file things on my puter - and I keep getting
nagging messages about the Cloud.-- TextEdit used to open with a blank
page - very efficient. No longer. Now I have to go to the task bar
atop the desktop list and click on NEW. Less efficient. - Ditto pages.
- Now suddenly I can no longer size iphotos for e-mail - they open on
the 'small' setting no matter which choice I click... I could go on &
on. Part of the problem I'm sure is my own inability to deal with NEW.
Anybody else having negative reactions?

Don't worry about saving to the cloud. If you don't have multiple devices that you want to share files between just save to your hard drive.

You must still be using iPhoto '09. iPhoto '11 handles mail itself.

Aperture 3.4 still exports to Mail and they can be resized. So I don't know why iPhoto wouldn't.

You are using the latest version, 9.4.2?

The only thing I can suggest is trashing the prefs.

In the Finder choose Go to Folder from the Go menu (Cmnd-Shift G).

Type /Users/UserName/Library/Preferences

Delete com.Apple.iPhoto.plist and restart iPhoto.

You might get a better answer if you ask in the iPhoto Support Community…

Sallie, Benjamin et al. -

Since most people just don't back up, I understand the benefits of the Cloud, but I have similar complaints to yours. For years I used TextEdit as a quick notepad for capturing vignettes and anecdotes for my writing. TextEdit popped up and I could fill a page with my thoughts. Now with the intervening and distracting step where I have to hit New Document and hope it's still set to save on desktop and not the Cloud, I am looking for an alternative, or will just use MSWord or Scrivener. I'm going to start trying Dictation, but as a writer, I'm not keen on Apple having rights to keep transcriptions of my words even after I quit using the program.

Also, when I travel I carry a Verizon WiFi because I get a better signal than AT&T in the locations I go, and 5gb/month is all I need --- but on a trip last summer iCloud devoured 2gb in one day transferring photos et al, so I quit the cloud for photos, but use it for Contacts and Calendar.

Also, since upgrading to Mt. Lion, when I transfer photos manually from my iPhone to MacBook Pro, Image Capture opens up with all my iPhone photos, and I have to cancel out and manually open iPhoto. An Apple G-Bar rep said he didn't know why that would happen, and I can find no Preference or Dialogue box in Image Capture or iPhoto or iTunes to have iPhoto open - although I'm pretty sure there used to be that option, I think in iTunes?

The only option for photos in iTunes was to sync to an iOS device. Saving photos from an iOS device was always done in iPhoto. The option to automatically open iPhoto when attaching a camera is in the General tab of iPhoto's preferences.

To get more control over what opens iPhoto automatically download the Cameras prefPane

Stephen - I downloaded word processor Bean ages ago & never bothered using it. Now I've started - it does just what Pages & TextEdit did before ML screwed them up & it's free & designed for Apple. Here's the link: http://www.bean-osx.com/Bean.html  Check it out - I'n still in the process of exploring it.

Ben - You helped - I didn't even know that mail could be sent directly from iPhoto! I went to iPhoto Preference and set it up. The photos now wing out slightly bigger tho' I still can't specify size as I used to.

Sallie, I wonder if you are simply missing the spot where you set the photo size. Take a look at the attached screen shot, the lower right corner where I am clicking a pop-up menu, and see if it helps.

You can also change the way iPhoto handles mail. In preferences you can change it back to old way, exporting to Mail.
