as who-is-who in the continent.
It is from this background that we
invite delegates to GIS Fundamental/ Advanced GIS and Web Mapping Workshops bringing together humanitarian
experts to learn and share experiences from 23rd October – 18th November 2017 in Nairobi Kenya.
1). GIS for WASH Capacity Building (Using ArcGIS 10.4)
: 23- 28th October 2017, Nairobi Kenya.
Course Overview:
Water-related challenges in developing countries are not limited to water supply
and sanitation services. Water shortages experienced by users across the region is plagued with chronic cycles of flooding and drought that are increasing in frequency and severity, in part exacerbated by climate change, and coupled with population growth,
significant upland watershed destruction, and non-equitable distributed of water resources.
There is need in improving access to water, increasing community capacity to manage
and better use water resources, improving water supply infrastructure in arid and semi-arid areas, improving water sanitation and hygiene practices, as well as protecting watersheds.
WASH programmes aims to facilitate water resources management, water quality monitoring
and promotion of good hygiene and sanitation practices.
Professionals involved in the WASH programs can use GIS as a tool for
planning, visualizing
and monitoring
these programmes.
This training exposes participants to the use of GIS for WASH programs with respect
to Data Sources, Mapping, Applications, Technology and Timeline for implementation.
Target Audience:
This course is for those who are new to geographic information systems (GIS) and QGIS open source Software and that wish
to learn what GIS is and how one can use it in WASH.
Prerequisites and recommendations:
No GIS experience required. This is a beginner level class. Participants should know how to use Windows-based software
for basic file management and browsing.
Training Objectives:
By completing this course, participants will be able to:-
Evaluate the spatial data requirements in Water Sanitation and Hygiene
Use GIS and RS as a tool for monitoring WASH projects
Assess spatial data availability and understand the importance of Spatial Data Infrastructure in WASH programs
Use participatory GIS (PGIS) at community level
Collect data using Mobile data gathering tools
Design and implement their own GIS projects that integrate remote sensing data, GPS-based field information in a proper
geospatial framework
2). G.I.S Fundamentals (Mapping and Spatial Analysis) Capacity Building (Using ArcGIS 10.4)
: 30th Oct- 4th Nov 2017, Nairobi Kenya.
Course Overview:
This intensive five days course provides the foundation for:
Understanding and appreciating GIS, What it can do, and How others are using it.
Participants shall learn the basic functions of a GIS, GIS Terminology, and why GIS is powerful tool for data analysis, retrieval
and visualization using Esri's ArcGIS for Desktop software. In course exercises, students work with ArcMap, an application within ArcGIS Desktop, to visualize geographic data, create maps, query a GIS database, and perform spatial analysis.
Participants shall also use ArcGIS online to share GIS data and analysis results.
Target Audience:
This course is for those who are new to geographic information systems (GIS) and ESRI’s ArcGIS Software and that wish
to learn what GIS is and how one can use it in his area of specialisation.
