November Events at the Garden

Saturday, November 14th, 9am – noon

Second Saturday presents “Making Paper from Plants.

Many plants provide fibers that can be woven into rope, clothing, or made into paper. Ancient Egyptians made paper from a plant called papyrus (the origin of our word paper). The inner part of the stems was cut into strips and laid side-by-side and over one another at right angles. Then the strips were pounded together to form a sheet of paper. In this workshop, participants will collect plants on the Garden grounds, pound them into fibers, then use the fibers to make their own beautiful, handmade paper.

This is an exciting and interactive program for children and parents to learn about the wonders of the plant world. Workshops are held from 9 a.m. to noon on the Second Saturday of each month in the Bodine Visitors' Center at the St. George Village Botanical Garden. Reservations are essential as the number of participants is limited; call 692-2874 to sign up. There is a $5 per person fee for Garden members and $8 per person for non-members. Children ages 6 and up are invited, and must be accompanied by an adult.

How YOU Can Help the Garden
In these hard economic times, a non-profit like the St. George Village Botanical Garden really depends on the generosity of our community members.  Please consider doing one or more of the following…

Donate TIMEVolunteers are needed in the Nursery, during cruise ships and during our big Christmas Events.  Volunteers are especially needed in the office to help with filing and data management.

Donate SUPPLIESThe Education Program is seeking old blenders for our paper making workshop, and those little “do not eat” silica packets to help keep seeds fresh.  The office is always looking for basic office supplies like tape, printer ink and colored paper.

Donate USED ITEMSAt Christmas Spoken Here, Dec. 6th, the Garden has a “White Reindeer Sale.”  Please consider donating any items that have been cluttering your house to this sale.  All proceeds directly benefit the Garden.

Donate MONEYConsider sponsoring a monthly Second Saturday program, or “Adopting a Spot” to support the Garden

New Jewelry for Men and books at the Museum Store
The Museum Store is happy to introduce a new line of coconut shell jewelry, hand carved by Virgin Islander Alton Evans Jr..  Alton creates jewelry out of natural materials in island themes perfect for men or women who appreciate a bolder style.  These adjustable length necklaces sell for $19.95, making them a great choice for gift giving.

St. Croix author, Patricia Gill (Murphy) has just completed her fourth historical novel, "America's Paradise:1936."  Ms. Gill, a former professor of Caribbean and Latin American history, writes about what the lives of people participating in local historical events may have been like within the backdrop of the multicultural society of the Caribbean.  Look for her new book, with a photo of SGVBG's own "Fern House" on its cover, now at the Museum Store.
