  • This week in 1957, glider pilot Bob Moore of Richland made the first crossing of the Cascade Mountains by a sailplane, using Wenatchee as a base.

Bob's flight occurred 20 years before I began flying, and Towline began even before that. I miss Bob, and I miss Towline, but neither of them is likely coming back. Thanks for the link to both of them.

And Fancher Field isn't coming back, either. It was still in operation in 1976 when I landed my Ka6e there during a contest, but turned into a subdivision a few years after that.. It was about 5 miles NW of EAT, and was where the gliders flew from.

As of our trip to revisit Fancher back in 2008 all that was left was the big storage barn, now surrounded by tall fence and used for RV storage. Both Norm and I were pretty choked up seeing the loss of that site…
