Hey folks,

There's a planning event for a San Francisco "DiscoTech" - kind of like a technology fair where people can learn about and try different kinds of technology. It would be fun to have a LocalWiki station where people can learn about the site and create entries.

If you're interested in being a part of this, come by the planning meeting this Wed. 9/3 at Code for America in SF. Details below.

(FYI, I also try to go to these Wednesday night SF Brigade's civic hack nights and work on SF LocalWiki. It's a great group of folks, so if you're interested in meeting up to do informal SF LocalWiki editing in a group with nice people in the lovely CFA space, you should come by.).

Hello!

Code for San Francisco and the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts want to DiscoTech with you! Join with other community-focused creative folks to explore holding a Discovering Technology Fair (DiscoTech). We'll gather at the Code for San Francisco hack night on Wednesday, September 3rd at the Code for America offices on 9th and Natoma.

DiscoTechs are events that feature interactive, multimedia workshops designed to demystify, engage and inform the community about issues of Internet use and ownership, providing the tools allowing communication to be more easily recognized as a fundamental human right.

You can find some more context and notes from discussions with previous DiscoTech organizers here, including notes from a DiscoTech held in SF back in March. Check out this summary:

About DiscoTech

A DiscoTech is a community-based, community-organized, multimedia workshop and fair. At a DiscoTech, participants learn more about the impacts and possibilities of technology, and take part in fun, interactive and media-based workshops. DiscoTech workshops are designed to demystify technology and create a space where we can inform and engage our community [...] A DiscoTech utilizes the unique skills and expertise within each community, and morphs to adapt to changing needs.

Code for America founder Jennifer Pahlka will open the hack night as the featured speaker. We will break to discuss DiscoTech a little after 7:00.

Please share with anyone you think is interested to join! Hope to see you there,

Hi everyone! I'm going to be hosting a Market Street history station for this DiscoTech, and I'd love for LocalWiki people to join me at this table as informal hosts and talk about why reading and writing about local history is fun, or even just stop by and say hi. :) It will be from 11 am - 3 pm tomorrow (Saturday) at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Sculpture Garden; I've attached the flyer for it.

I thought about doing something like an editing station, but when I talked to the organizers, it seemed there wouldn't be wifi available, and people probably wouldn't have laptops with them. So instead, this will be a mini amateur history exhibit with some signs displaying stories/photos/maps about Market Street, plus a simple activity to draw your own plaque that you think should be on Market Street. I'm also including a little sign talking about LocalWiki. I attached preview photos of the mini-exhibit, just for fun.

My overall idea is to try to share how compelling I find learning about super-local history - what people were doing 100 years ago on the exact street where you walk or work, giving you a feeling of personal connection with the past. And how starting with a super-narrow focus (like a street or building) can make learning more fun instead of potentially feeling overwhelming!

I'm out if the country right now, so I won't be able to help table tomorrow, but here's a flyer I made for the Code for America event a few days back: https://localwiki.org/main/LocalWiki_informational_materials
