"It's not so important who starts the game but who finishes it."
- John Wooden
As a Hall of Fame basketball coach, John Wooden (now retired) knows of what he speaks. Whether it's in basketball, our personal lives or traditional business the one who finishes is the real
winner.
Often, particularly in real life we see those who start things they can't finish. Whether we're talking about the developer who begins a mega community of high-dollar houses and fails to complete the project or one who starts a business and gives up because
someone (maybe even seven someones) said "no" to his pitch... when you don't finish you can't win.
I'll guarantee that no matter what it is you're doing, if you quit... a non-quitter will come along, capitalize on all your efforts and make a fortune.
It really isn't important who starts, but rather who finishes.

"It is one of the beautiful compensations of this life that no one can sincerely help another without helping himself."
- Charles Dudley
Have you ever thrown your whole self into helping another? Whether it was in something really important or just a small thing with which someone needed help, your helping that person helped
you in ways you may not yet imagine.
Metaphor for this is helping someone reach the top of a mountain. You cannot help someone climb to the top of the mountain without arriving at the top of the mountain yourself.
"No day in which you learn something is a complete loss."
- David Eddings
Hopefully you learn something of importance each day. I can't imagine a day in which I don't gather a wealth of knowledge. If you make it a point to ask people about themselves and their business
endeavors they will, in many cases, tell you things you had never dreamed of knowing.
This process serves two purposes; the first is to let the person with whom you're speaking know you are interested in who they are and what they do; the second is to gain a wealth of knowledge from someone who may know many things you don't know.
Become a seeker of information. It is a fact that in all of life we find what we are looking for. Seek information and as you seek it, it will begin to seek you.
"Sometimes you have to put your foot down
in order to get a leg up."
- Dave Weinbaum
While I'm always the first to tell you to be a caring giving person... even if it is not reciprocated... there comes a time when it's necessary to step up and plant your feet firmly on the
ground. There are those who will push and push until they have your back against the wall and then they'll push some more.
Hopefully you've come to the place in your life where you can recognize these types and you avoid them like the plague. If, however, you do find yourself in a situation that requires the ability to deal efficiently with one or more of these people, you need
to do what it takes to protect yourself from them.
The first thing you can do is just remove yourself from their sphere of influence. Secondly, if (for whatever reasons) that's not feasible, the next best thing is to block them mentally. Often the greatest power these people have lies in the fact that you and
many others continue to tolerate them. The point is that you must identify them and in a way that best serves you, put your foot down and refuse to accept their stuff. As long as you continue to stand quietly and take it, they will continue to dole it out.
Depending on your affiliation with them, to continue to let them get away with whatever they're doing could be damaging to you... if not in terms of your outer world, consider what your tolerating them may be doing to your mind.
The world is abundant with caring, and helpful people. Seek affiliations with those people and find a way to disassociate yourself from people who are seriously damaging to you and your aspirations.
