It’s National Volunteer Week and we need you to help educate the community about the housing shortage.

Today’s the day! Join us for our National Day of Action by helping educate the community on why we all need to work together to solve the housing crisis.   Participation is easy. Just post on your social media sharing one fact about the housing crisis, tag @yimbyaction, and #EndTheHousingShortage on your post. You can do a video, a reel, or post some photos or infographics; the choice is yours! To make it even easier, here are some talking points you can share in your post: Communities across the United States are experiencing a housing shortage. Fewer homes were built in the 2010s than in any other decade since the 1960s. The shortage is hitting hardest in cities and towns with the greatest opportunities: places where people can find good jobs, top-notch schools, economic success, better healthcare, and strong social connections. That’s why I joined the YIMBY pro-housing movement, and you should too. Exclusionary housing policies and NIMBYism systemically exclude renters, young people, and people of color from the process that determines how many homes are added and where. Wealthy cities and towns, in particular, have historically held the power to block new homes (especially subsidized affordable homes) from being built within their communities. The YIMBY movement is fighting to create affordable housing for people of color. I hope you’ll join me in the fight! When there is abundant housing, people will be able to live close to their jobs and other amenities which will lower transportation costs (not to mention air pollution!) that many people face from having to live dozens of miles away from the things they need. That means fewer super-commuters and more walkable neighborhoods. One of the key parts of the YIMBY movement is sustainability, and I hope you’ll join us in making this a reality in our community.
