Dearest SF-MET Toastmasters!

I humbly present to you the recap of last Wednesday’s glorious meeting:

Marshika and Kayla led our meeting wonderfully as a celebration of the controversial Columbus Holiday with a theme of “Exploration” or 探索。  Marco ignited the meeting with his touching and inspiring icebreaker speech titled “Where Do I Begin?” In his speech, Marco invited us to explore his life thus far and what an adventure it has been.  Timo helped us further explore the future possibilities of technology by talking about 3-D Printing which is truly fascinating and exemplifies that human ingenuity has no boundaries.  And, Ursula took on the great challenge of giving her first Mandarin speech and successfully conquered the multitude of choices we are faced with every day.

The Tabletopics were led by Alberto and Barry and they pushed our imaginations into outer space and threw our minds back to ancient China. Finally, Elliott served as the General Evaluator and we have an opportunity to improve in the following areas:

  1. Timing for Tabletopics: As the tabletopics master, we should remember that the point is to allow as many members as possible to give impromptu speeches.  Accordingly, keep your intros short and give clear instructions to the speaker regarding their 3 min time limit.
  2. Language Equality: Let’s follow Kayla’s wonderful example of how the Mandarin Toastmaster can stand on equal footing with the English Toastmaster.  In other words, please feel free to give your own comments/introductions in Mandarin as opposed to simply translating.  At the same time, please keep in mind that time is short and your role as the Toastmaster is to facilitate the meeting and make sure everything runs on time.
  3. Encourage Audience Members to Speak: When you have a speaking role, please allow others members in the audience with no speaking roles to speak. Even if the tabletopics master invites you to the stage, kindly let them know that you already have a speaking role.

Events:

We’re having our wonderful outdoor TM meeting tomorrow at SF Goldent Gate park!
