SF-MET leaders,
We had a good meeting last night and General Evaluator Ken noted a shift toward levity – ie. people having fun!
As your mentor/cheerleader, I want to share some positive results from my applying the Toastmasters concept... repeated by me (ad nauseum) :
Be a good host: Sit next to guests to give hospitality, information and encouragement. Listen to them and find out their hopes and needs. Don't sell Toastmasters to them.
I sat between two first-time visitors Jennifer and Debbie, and found out that Jennifer is shopping around for an organization to develop language and public speaking skills plus personal growth. She likes the bilingual aspect of SF-MET, but is also looking into the JET club. After the meeting, she filled out an application and PAID! Debbie would like to enhance her Mandarin which she learned at Berkeley. She told me she was surprised to find a solid program on public speaking, and she took an application, saying that she would consider developing her bi-lingual abilities here. When I was going down the elevator, I chatted with 3 mandarin guests who became very excited about mastering their lectern jitters - in their native tongue! And English too.
Schedule guest speakers who will promote SF-MET, not just themselves. We leveraged the message from speaker George Main to Be Prepared/Be Personal/Be Present and proudly announced to the audience that we will CHARTER, making SF-MET the first Mandarin-English Bilingual club in the history of Toastmasters since 1934!! Applications were eagerly requested.
An
Agenda! A well organized, good-looking one. When the guests looked
confused, or asked questions about TableTopics, evaluations, etc, I
pointed to the agenda. I noticed the guests were studying the agenda
throughout the meeting.
Having stated that we are finally
able to have some fun, it is equally important to realize that the
fun comes after we have set up the infra-structure. Guests admired
both our professionalism and congeniality. For me, I especially
enjoy that we are attracting like-minded people!
