Pop Culture in Peanuts

Presented by the Charles M. Schulz Museum | Traveling Exhibition Program

From coon skin caps to 3-D glasses, Charles Schulz made frequent reference to pop culture fads and trends in the Peanuts comic strip. The Charles M. Schulz Museum’s newest proposed traveling exhibition, Pop Culture in Peanuts, takes a light-hearted look at the last half of twentieth-century America, as viewed through Schulz’s witty and whimsical interpretation.

Like any writer, Schulz used all of his experiences, observations, and reflections in creating his comic strip, and the eccentricities of pop culture were often a rich source of material. “Part of Schulz’s genius lay in his ability to adapt the latest pop cultural slang or trend in a way that was relevant and uniquely funny,” said Jane O’Cain, Curator of the exhibition.

This proposed traveling exhibition includes 70 high-quality reproductions of original Peanuts strips and a small selection of three dimensional objects highlighting Peanuts pop culture-themed memorabilia, as well as some of Schulz’s personal effects. Each hosting venue is invited to enhance this exhibition with their own community or institution’s pop culture artifacts from photographs and newspaper clippings to that old mood ring or surfboard sitting in the closet!

This exhibition will be available starting January 2013. Appropriate for 1500-2000 square foot galleries. The rental fee is $7,500 +inbound shipping for a 12 week minimum booking.
