Applications to improve rankings/SEO

I've seen many, many applications out there - claiming to help improve
SEO. A few claim to have technology to submit your site automatically
versus manually. Without getting to specific about the products - why
would I want to spend a lot of money on any of those software - that
claims to submit my site to mulitple sites (and really, it's up to the
accepting sites not the software - to link) or improve key word
ususage - when I can just use the free webmaster tools on
search.msn.com, yahoo site management, or google analytics - to name a
few?

Note: I'm not trying to challenge the software as being useless - I'm
just trying to understand what I would gain from using it.

I would not use any program that submits my site to hundreds of directories: this may be useless at best.
But I do use programs that help me to get a better vision of my site, my keywords, their ranks etc. They do help me to (manually) improve one thing or the other.
If you want  a good SEO, this is going to use brains and cleverness, no automated robots.
