Dear all--

Hi. Just a quick reminder that the deadline for the submission of your country papers is coming up - end of October, Tuesday the 31st (yes, 2006!). The RTDs have been great learning experiences for me and hopefully for all of you as well. Daphne Villanueva, who attended the RTDs of Chin Huat in KL and Zaw in Chiang Mai, also expressed excitement in seeing first hand how this research on political space for advocacy has moved along. The comments, suggestions, recommendations (including violent reactions) forwarded by the many participants in the various country RTDs will only help us make sure we produce something relevant to the times and also the needs of the advocates we wish to arm with this information that we are generating. I hope that with the limited time, you are still able to incorporate quick revisions into your drafts/presentations.

Only Ajarn Amara has yet to go through an RTD. She is scheduled to present her paper on Tuesday, 31 October, in Chula. From what I've gathered, it is now a highly anticipated event as media representatives have expressed interest to cover the RTD. This only strengthens the point that an assessment of democracy in the region is an urgent concern. I suppose many are curious to find out what is Ajarn Amara's official take on the military takeover and how it will be discussed in her paper on spaces for advocacy.

Randy is also scheduled to present his paper to a small group of advocates from the region in Pattaya on 10-12 November. This is also why it is imperative that you turn in your drafts on time (or early!) - we need to give Randy enough breathing space to actually put things together for his own regional paper. So please, everyone, let's not give Randy a headache. Haha...

A few suggestions... Please go back to our 'style sheet' guidelines as you go about the writing/rewriting phase. You may also want to start your papers strongly by going to the meat of the matter - an abstract perhaps which shouldn't be more than a page. Please use subheads as well to help ensure readability of your papers. Most important of all, please try to stick to our reasonable limit in terms of length (if I remember correctly, we agreed on 20 pages or roughly 20,000 words).

With all of that said, have a happy weekend, writers! Haha...

All the best,
Marissa
