I think that depends. Is he the hero, that in the beginning was a self
absorded dandy who then went away and grew up? Then I would say that
he just payed the rent. That way when he leaves she becomes destitue
and has to find other ways to keep up her house. And then when he
comes back he will feel all sorts of bad cause of what he allowed to
happen. Cause he did not really lapse in payment, his evil solocitor
did! Muahahahahah!!!!
Now if he is just her first love interest then he buys it for her but
does not put it in her name. HE goes away and comes back to try and
take it back for his new mistress, which allows a new man to come in
and save the day for our heroine.

She could do either or a combo. I would say that she attempted to get
a new paramour, but that whole life style is not really her, like she
has only had one so she may not be that preacticed at the art. So she
tries and the guy chooses not to take her, but help her by giving her
a job of sorts helping him with his younger siblings or children.
To really answer this question you gotta give me a character analysis
so I can accurately ascertain how she would react to each situation.
Great Story lines though!!!!
