Weekend Movies: Gangsters and Guys in Drag
"Running Scared" is super violent and derivative, according to Desson Thomson, who calls it "a movie that never met an over-the-top character, convoluted subplot or gruesome exit wound it didn't love." Also this weekend: Tyler Perry dons a dress in "Madea's Family Reunion," Jon Stewart provides the voice for an evil sorcerer in "Doogal" and vampires roam the streets of Moscow in "Night Watch." Independents' Day
The D.C. Independent Film Festival kicks off Thursday and promises more than 100 films in a variety of genres and at a variety of D.C. locations through March 12. The opening night festivities -- to be held at the Avalon Theatre -- include a screening of "My Tiny Universe," starring John Heard and Debi Mazar, and a reception. Tickets to that event are $25, but most screenings are $9 or $7 for students and seniors.
Cinema Study Hall
Be a real know-it-all on Oscar night by checking out the free screenings at the Academy Award Nominee Showcase, held at the William G. McGowan Theater at the National Archives. Documentary favorites like "March of the Penguins" and "Murderball" will be shown, as well as nominated selections in the live action short film, animated short film and documentary short categories. The series begins Wednesday and runs through Sunday, so if you want to get there, start marching.
