Hello fellow chicken lovers,

I came home today to find a notice from the city for a noise complaint
concerning the chickens attached to my front door. Has any one else
had to deal with noise complaints? What did you do?

I have 7 chickens, and they make a HUGE racket every morning waiting
to be let out of the coop. We installed a door that opens
automatically by timer so they've been less noisy in the early AM.
But, they still make a lot of noise throughout the day, more than just
their egg-laying noises - like really, really loud honking. Anyone
have strategies for how to lessen this noise? We let them range around
our yard during the day, but I suspect they get a little bored and
want to get into the rest of the yard (we let them out there when
we're home).

Any advice or suggestions.... gladly will take!

Charity

That seems excessive. We have leaf blowers around here that sound like jet engines, and I'm told there's nothing we can do. Can you contact the office that gave you the complaint and appeal?

My chickens seem especially noisy these days as well. We haven't had a complaint yet, but they are so noisy that if they weren't mine, I woud be tempted to complain myself!! I usually run out and throw them some scratch or cut some chard or lettuce to shut them up. it helps for awhile!

Thanks for all your replies! I called the City this morning, and they said it was just a complaint of them being noisy - nothing specific.

No actions are required for now, but he did say that if they get multiple complaints from two different people, then they do have a mediation process with the city and an attorney - but that seems pretty far off.

It does seem that our RI Reds are the noisiest- though the Silver-laced Wyandotte and the Ameracauna can also be loud. My husband and I both work during the day, so we can't really act on it much - for now I think we'll concentrate on keeping them quite in the early morning!

I'm so glad we have this group to ask for advice!
