I'm located in west San Antonio and new to the area.  I'm looking for a "friend of the trade" to partner on a sUAS system build and flying team.  The system will be built for multiple applications by simply changing payloads such as but not limited to: Agricultural research, wildlife management, land/geographical surveying, hunting assistance (feral hog extermination etc.), Search & Rescue, wireless exploitation and "warflying", aerial photography, aerial surveillance.  Not only will this be fun, but this could very well become a great business opportunity for anyone seeking a long-term partnered project.  Upon completion present the system to the local community, agencies, and market the UAS systems for sale and/or use.  If this sounds like something you might be interested in, please contact me via email: parr...@gmail.com  I look forward to hearing from you!

So Hunter, What type of platform are you thinking to use for this undertaking? Got things specific in mind yet? I am interested. I have to live in Silicon Valley, CA but get out to Texas often enough. Currently in College Station on vacation visiting family. I also own a company that designs and builds UAV's. Fixed wing has been our focus to date. I like all those applications you spoke of....especially the hunting part being a native Texan and all. Myron may have a interest in this too. Let me know your thoughts.

I'm looking at building medium to large scale, twin boomed fixed wing for long endurance and area coverage.  I'm looking at modeling it roughly after the RQ-7 Shadow.  I've been in the R&D stage of this project for almost a year and starting to put it all on paper.  That's very interesting that you own a UAV company.  I'd like to hear more about your company.  Do you have website?

Hey Hunter,  if you fancy a small road trip to Wimberley I think you will find everything your looking for.  I/we (rpflightsystems and RP Search services operate at a private ranch out here. We have a small shop and do all of our own r&d and mfg right here. We also operate a pretty decent sized government owned UA fleet for Fire research out here.  I organize flyins and FPV meets at the ranch as well.  Give me a call this afternoon if u have time to chat!

If you are looking for local Composite talent to work with, I have not personally worked with these guys but have heard good things about them and their work / products. They are in the S.A. area and this is a link:  http://www.blazingwings.com/index1.html

I have just formed a new company called: Asia Tech Drones S.A. We are currently manufacturing a plane I call the Cyclops. You may have heard of it by the name of the Techpod. We are manufacturing a fully composite version at 110" wingsspan and an EPO / CF version too. This is taking longer because of how long it takes to make the moulds for the foam. We are offering a "T" tail AND a "V" Tail configuration in the kits. The prototype flew for over 3 hours with a pair of 2800 Mah batteries on board. as well it can take on another kilo of payload for more batteries and camera gear. The composite version is on schedule to be on display at European show late Janurary. I keep the group posted on this progress.

Cheers,
John Smith

Yeah it's has turned into a strange sort of deal. The ex partner has gone off on the Kickstarter path and chosen to ignore the guy who funded and paid for everything up to this point including his salary for a couple years....He suddenly doesn't need me after he raised $49,000 on Kickstarter. Which has a couple of kick ups in itself because the last $15,000 in support came from his own family when it looked like it wasn't going to make the funded goal.....so there was a little smoke and mirrors going on there but I wish Wayne well on his direction. We are going another with the same plane design. I'm manufacturing both a Composite and EPO foam version with some Tail configuration choices. I have a couple more planes in the design phase right now too. I am more focused on a commercial grade plane with extremely long endurance and yet "Packable". I'd really be interested in hearing more about your planes that you are working on. Keep in touch.

Oh man...sorry about that.  I had no idea about the background behind it.  I hope I didn't stir up any painful memories!  I agree about the commercial grade.  Even though I'm currently working out of my garage, I would like to take the time to create a commercial grade product.  I know it will be difficult given the lack of facilities and tools but I'm willing to give it a shot.  I'm hoping to start a business with this someday.  I would eventually like to be able to sell a RTF UAS System that is capable of several different types of missions with options tailored to the customers.  I'll definitely keep in touch.

I'm defiantly interested in joining/partnering up with you or a group to help get a company up and going. Just to give you a little background on me:  I'm an Embry-Riddle grad. with a EEE degree from OSU along with having my commercial rotary and fixed winged licenses. I live in south Austin and have been building my UAV's since Sept. 2011 by myself and would love to have more people to be involved/partnered with. I've already spent what seems a small fortune on what I have now and I need more space/workshop and input for sure! Let me know if you would like to chat more, I'm available anytime.

Cheers!

I'm interested in this too. I'm in San Jose, CA area but moving back to Austin area is high on my "To-Do" list if I can swing it. I'm in the process of launching a new FPV / UAV fixed wing plane. I'm working on two other designs at present that are more geared towards commercial use but can be toned / trimmed down for a Hobbyist version as well. I would really like to work with some folks about putting together a couple versions of mobile GCS. Catapult launcher and a Arrestor Net recovery system (either arestor netting or parachute or both). Let me know if interested in these areas.

Cheers,

We are interested in all of those ideas and have pondered on a couple of them.  I would love to chat with everyone regarding some of these ideas.  John,  give me your number so we can contact if you don't mind.

To all who is interested,

If you haven't noticed there is a bill trying to pass Legislature here in Texas outlawing the use of UASs because of intentional and inadvertant photos and video of people's property without their consent.  Everyone needs to contact their congressmen and representatives to push the technological advances that UASs can provide to public service, commercial applications, and agricultural facilities.  We need to be loud about this or else this will fall through the cracks and become a law right under our noses just like every other petty thing this government has enacted to cripple the small businesses and local economic development.

I have contacted my local representative, but I am hoping this will be seen as a Federal issue and not a State issue. Besides, law enforcement officers can legally use helicopters and manned aircraft, why not unmanned?

The biggest hurdle I can see is the FAA.

All,

I sent the letter below to House Rep. Lance Gooden yesterday.  He immediately called me back.  He tried to explain to me that this bill should not affect legitimate commercial grade UAV systems.  He said it would affect hobbyist attaching a camera to a UAV or RC.  In all this could be the beginning of a long road ahead to keep our systems in the unless we act together.

At the time I had not read the bill.  I will go this this bill today, very thoroughly, to see what's inside.

Mr. Gooden,

I am a citizen out of San Antonio, TX.  I also support the development of UAV technology in the region.  The reason I am writing to you today is to STRONGLY URGE you to RECONSIDER that piece of legislation that bans UAVs over Texas.

Using a UAV for voyeuristic intentions is but only one draw back in UAV capabilities.  Its like saying internet porn is bad so lets stop the internet.  Or, identity theft is bad so lets stop credit cards.  Additionally, what is to stop anyone, with half a brain, to assemble a small RC aircraft and put a camera on it?  What's to stop guys like Google from passing a satellite over your roof and take photos?  What's to say they're not doing that right now?  Should we go after Google?  Should we go after that RC guy that's teaching his children about aviation, or topographical surveying?

Just this past weekend I learned of a helicopter crash near Gillett, TX.  I contacted a friend of mine, knowledgeable about the area.  He explained to me that the two men were flying a helicopter to spot and locate wild hogs.  The helicopter crashed and injured, to a critical condition, the two souls inside.  I explained to my friend that all of this could have been avoided had they used a drone rather than an expensive helicopter and an expensive recovery.  He agreed and is now very interested in UAV development.

UAVs can help in many ways including but not limited to fire control, agriculture, search and rescue, aerial surveying with LIDAR technology, border protection and many other research possibilities.  I will mention here that Corpus Christi currently employs two (2) predator drones for Border Protection.  This list of good overwhelmingly out weighs the bad.

A ban on commercial grade UAVs is a set back to the economic development of an emerging market that could assist the Texas economy.  Why take away a potential job sector from the state of Texas?

The ball doesn't drop for us UAV folk until late 2014/early 2015 from the FAA. The FAA realizes there is a use for UAVs and is assebling legislation to reflect that realization.  How about we let them figure it out?

Please give us a chance to prove the benefit of UAVs rather than make a premature decision to prevent something good.

Thank You,

Jarrad Landry

The bill was morphed into HB 912.

Sadly, it looks like the bill was passed and it will be effective 1 September 2013.

(If you are going to film the bats, you have just a little over two months to do it).

SATX-ATX just might have to go underground until the FAA makes a solid ruling, and even then, I imagine that a legal battle would be costly. Sigh...
