If I were a professor, I would definitely say that once a semester.
Anywho...Rachel and I had a particularly stimulating (and long) gchat
this morning and thought maybe it was time to give the essay writing
another go. I have pasted portions below (read the Ny Times article
at the start about the supreme court for context and the rest of it
for HILARITY). But I'm down to do some essay-ing. Anyone else?
me: http://www.nytimes.com/2007/06/21/washington/21memo.html
me: seriously
it's just sad really...fucking cowboys, every last one of them
12:14 PM Rachel: really, the whole point of a law tradition is
continuing to acknowledge past minds
it reminds me of talmud class. it's a lot like this
me: hafha
12:15 PM i love it when your extreme jewishness comes out
but yes i see what you're saying
you cannot simply assume that "you know better"
that's completely fucked
12:21 PM Rachel: exactly. the extreme jewishness is extreme so it
can't be kept down completely
12:22 PM but seriously, in the talmud every little thing that might
relate to another precedent, they go back to and discuss every atom of
every aspect of the dead sages thinking. and it's really respectable
in a way how they go and try to figure out what was the intellectual
motivation for a past ruling so you can decide on what basis to modify
it or not
12:23 PM me: i mean that's how it should be...you have to consider the
mindset, times do change, but you have go back and make sure you're
not attributing some really important precdent to a "times have
changed" mentality
12:24 PM Rachel: exactly.
12:25 PM it's infurating the way bush is infuriating bc it's not like
you're just fucking up in your name right now.
you're in effect shitting on all the hard work people put in before
you
me: and all that will come after
later on...
12:37 PM me: she's in new mexico or something i think
doing biological research in the desert
Rachel: cool
12:38 PM man, I wish I had a real interest in that kind of stuff
me: yeah...
sounds cool
12:39 PM but then when you realize you're collecting poop from turtles
so that you can find out if the berries in this region have been
contaminated or genetically altered due to pesticides...
and it turns into slides of poop on microscopes
then you're like...wait, why do i care about this?
12:40 PM Rachel: ahahahahah
12:41 PM but that's the thing, you do care, you really care enought
about the berries, that you will go to new mexico and look at turtle
poop. it's just so real and grounded. it's sounds nice
me: hahaha
yeah
it is so tangible
it's not ideas and books but actual things that you do to produce
some sort of data set
12:42 PM Rachel: yup.
and you are tangibly helping
man, I'm going to have nothing to say to you tonight
me: hahahaha
we have had quite a lively discussion
poop to politics
12:43 PM that should actually be the name of a blog belonging to one/
all of us
Rachel: hahaha. so appropriate
I think we should try to get our shit together on the essay thing
again
if we each just write one good one, it will be a good start
me: yeah i've been thinking about that
i'll send an email
