SACP statement on the 80th anniversary of the World Federation of Trade Unions
Friday, 3 October 2025: - The South African Communist Party (SACP) congratulates workers across the globe on the celebration of the 80th founding anniversary of the World Federation of Trade Unions (WFTU).
Rooted in revolutionary working class internationalism since its founding from 3 to 8 October 1945 in its First World Trade Union Congress in Paris, the WFTU has stood the test of time in a rapidly changing world and showed its mantle in the struggle for total social emancipation. The WFTU has never abandoned its roots, and with that consistency has succeeded in organising and uniting workers, thus making a sterling contribution to the raising of working class consciousness among the people of the world, the vast majority of whom are the working class and poor.
In celebration of the WFTU 80th founding anniversary, the SACP joined workers united under the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) on its Red Friday marches across the country in defence of workers’ rights. The SACP supports workers’ demands for quality public healthcare services, an end to corruption and killing of whistleblowers who expose corruption in the public and private sectors, for better working conditions, and against privatisation and neo-liberal policies and accompanying austerity measures, which have a huge impact on jobs, among other demands.
The SACP fully supports the International Day of Action to be held on 7 October, as declared by the WFTU. To this end, the SACP will play its vanguard role to build principled unity among all workers. The SACP calls for unity among workers to defend and advance the right of all to work under decent conditions and against economic exploitation.
SACP Red October Campaign Launch and The People’s Red Caravan
